How to remove letterbox from 16:9 video for Web posting?

What I'm trying to do is fairly simple, it would seem 🙂
I have SD footage captured 16:9 anamorphic and I would like the final output of this quicktime file to have the letterbox removed, making the screen filled but retaining the 16:9 ratio.

I found some useful pictures online for a visual aid to what i'm tryin to achieve if there is confusion

If you're seeing letterboxing in the canvas, your sequence settings are incorrect. If you're editing in an anamorphic SD sequence you'll see a widescreen image.

And, if you are not seeing LB'ing in the canvas, just export at a 16x9 aspect ratio - 1280x720, 640x360, 320x180 etc.

Question: I shot in HD downconverted from camera firewire into FCP as anamorphic 16:9 SD. I do see the letterboxing in the canvas. Is this wrong then? in SD you're saying I can see 16:9 anamorphic w/o letterboxing in the canvas??

My ultimate goal is to put my 16:9 output video online like i've seen in before online, which had only content, and no letter boxing... Elaborate or reiterate please???

Yes. What are the exact item properties of the sequence you're editing into? Do they match the item properties of your clips exactly?

Aha Mr. Wolsky! I tested out the canvas and qt and it worked as you said! I must have captured correctly this time! What a relief- no extra drama!

Offhand, what kind of incorrect settings would cause the canvas to display SD anamorphic 16:9 shots to appear letter boxed? Thanks pal!

If the sequence is not widescreen the anamorphc material will appear letterboxed just as it might on a 4:3 TV.
