10 minutes to boot - "Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet"

good morning and seasonal greetings :-P

Last week my powerbook had a system crash the boot process takes very long.
When I boot I see the apple sign and then for about 10 minutes I see just a blue screen.
Then I can login and everything works normal...

The only thing I found which could be the reason for this is in my system.log:

any idea how to solve this?

Have you tried unplugging all connected devices to your PowerBook like external mouse/keyboard, harddrives? Does it still take that long when it is just the computer and nothing else (except power) attached?

Your line at the bottom in green says MacBook Pro, but you mention a PowerBook, and you posted in the 10.6 forum, which no PowerBook can support. If it is a PowerBook, you might have better luck asking in the PowerBook forum ( http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=120) or the 10.4 ( http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177) or 10.5 ( http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235) forum depending on which version of Mac OS X your PowerBook is running if you don't get answers here.

Yes - you're right. I'm using a MacBookPro. I'm new in the apple world 🙂

Yes - no change. It still takes 10 minutes to boot...

depending on which version of Mac OS X

I'm using Mac OSX 10.6.3.

@DaddyPaycheck
Are you able to boot from your OSX installation disk and use the Disk Utility to check the drive?

Yes - I'm able to boot and use OSX. The problem I have is that it takes 10 minutes to boot.

I think this is more a software issue. Anyway I checked the harddisk.
Verify Disk and Disk Permission showed no errors.

I think the error has something to do with this message
Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet

any ideas?

thanks for your help...

Ok, I don't know how relevant it can be for you guys, but after installing the 10.6.3 v 1.1. combo, repairing the file permissions and eventually doing a reset pram / nvram I apparently got my imac back to normal life: startup we no freeze, kernel process back to nearly 0% and no longer scary messages in the console. FYI in pursuing all possible causes I did a check for viruses as well (none found) and run an extensive hardware check (no problems found).
Just my 5 ct on the subject.

I have the same problem, it took almost 9 minutes.

Here is my system.log filtered with "IOKit":

May 13 23:27:38 mini configd[14]: InterfaceNamer: timed out waiting for IOKit to quiesce
May 13 23:31:55 mini /usr/libexec/hidd[44]: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet
May 13 23:35:55 mini WindowServer[61]: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet
May 13 23:36:48 mini SystemStarter[34]: IOKitWaitQuiet: -536870186

May 14 00:07:51 mini configd[14]: InterfaceNamer: timed out waiting for IOKit to quiesce
May 14 00:12:05 mini /usr/libexec/hidd[44]: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet
May 14 00:16:05 mini WindowServer[66]: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet
May 14 00:16:58 mini SystemStarter[34]: IOKitWaitQuiet: -536870186

After boot up my keyboard and mouse are not responding at all until get the message of "WindowServer[66]: Timeout waiting for IOKit to be quiet".
However, while my mouse and keyboard are not responding I could use my mac mini complete normal from another mac through screen sharing service.

Plz help !!!

Hi there
Can anyone give some advice on this issue, please!
My Macbook boot time is over 10 minutes!!!
How I got there ?
I shut down by mistake the computer while it was doing firmware update 2 weeks ago (end of June 2010). This led to a booting time over 10 minutes every time I restart the computer.
What I have try

1. Re install the update from Software update ( it show that is installed OK now) –make no difference

2. Download from Apple web site RESTORE FIRMWARE CD
Try to install it following the instructions – holding the power button right after the start while the indicators lights start flashing 3 time long 3 times short and then the computer will boot from RESTORE FIRMWARE CD - it did not work – no lights were flashing , the CD could goes into cd drive but do nothing. (Other folks had the same problem)
Other than this computer seems to work great after the slow restart.

BTW hard drive has for Mac 100 GB free space and for Win 80GB

4GB 2GHZ My MacBook 5.2 (2009) Snow Leopard 10.6.4 has a single user under MacOSX and has a Windows 7 via bootcam
