Adding MailBox Folders

Sounds like you are using a POP3 mail account which does not permit the addition of folders beyond the initial ones - you need to use IMAP and set up the folder structure in webmail and it will replicate across to the Mail programme.

Any self-respecting email client allows for local storage of messages, organized in folders. This has to be more than a big iPhone or Touch - it has to behave like a laptop replacement: some users will use this as their primary device, or at least a sophisticated extension of their primary device. I'll gladly give up my mac book for an imac and ipad if the ipad fully replaces my couch potato use of my macbook.

So, how to double click in safari? Comcast webmail wants a double click on a highlighted message in order to open it.

In Comcast mail, check the message you want to open, then hit the blue right arrow icon at the top of the message pane. Unfortunately, I can't seem to scroll the message window however. Hope this helps. What is iMAP anyway?

Surely you jest. You write as if POP is inferior to IMAP. Which is best depends on each users needs. Creating mailboxes or folders with POP is common practice. Surely the iPad has this ability. It is basic to mail management. And email is basic to the Internet. Can we get a definitive answer from a Apple technician, please.

Ask away (not to me as I am not one) ..... the iPad is designed to sync with a computer and the computer keeps the mail structure either on its own hard disc (using POP3) or online (using IMAP/Exchange). There are lots of helpful articles in the iPhone which would help you understand better.

I added an email account to my wife's iPad, using her normal login/password. It works fine. Her 'main' email account was initially set up on her Mac laptop. I sync her iPad with MY computer (it's newer/more dependable and backed up). I do not have my wife's email account set up in Mail on my Mac.

In this setup there doesn't seem to be a way to create additional folders for the iPad, as neither her laptop nor my desktop's Mail app syncs with her iPad email. While her iPad email is undoubtedly backed up on my Mac when I sync her iPad, that backup info is not accessible/useable.

Okay, I understand the confusion - let me clarify a bit further.

The Mail application on the iPad cannot create folders at all - no way around this.

To get more folders on your wifes iPad, you need to go to the webmail version of the email account online (providing it is set up as an IMAP account) and set up the folders there - and then sync the iPad with the online version. The account on the iPad will replicate with the online version via the internet connection.

Basically, the main location for the mail remains online but with synchronised copies maintained on the Mac and on the iPad - but always kept in sync.

Creating folders in pop is not possible. When you create a folder when you have pop configured, the folder is created locally, not on the server.

Imap allowed for the creation of folders on the server side. Pop does not.

Since the iPad is a mobile device, you can't expect it to be the storage device for all your email. That's what the server is for, and hence why imap was invented.

Not sure what you mean by blue right arrow icon at the top of the message pane. I'm looking at smartzone main email page an I don't see a blue right arrow. It's nuts that one has to double-click in the first place. Worse yet I find that many of the interactions with the page pop up the keyboard unnecessarily.

Oh well.

Right - nothing new there - except for an bit of disdain for POP. What you mean to say is - one cannot create any folders for any application on the iPad. Period. Just because it is a mobile device does not mean it cannot store items. No one expects to store "all" ones email. Comon. Just not in user created folders, apparently. Perhaps in a later version of the OS it will allow user created folders. Those of us who prefer POP certainly hope so. Keep in mind that using the server is an option and some of us prefer to only sync with our computer. That is a normal and intended use of the iPad - as much as being tethered to a server service.

The intended use of the iPad and even the iPhone, in steve jobs's own words is the marriage of power client based apps with powerful cloud based services. Why do you think MobileMe is imap only? Mail is supposed to be processed on the server, that's how email is designed. Pop is the not-so-efficient way of email.

What happens upon a crash of your local machine? You lose all your email?

Turns out there's a 'lite' version of com cast's webmail (smartzone lite) that calls for single-clicks rather than double-clicks.

I use a POP account. I can create folders on my laptop & desktop; Apple, I'd like to organize my email on the ipad too. Sorting email is important. The workaround I've come up with is to copy & past mail I want to move to a folder to a Pages document, then it doesn't clutter up my inbox. Apple, please help us anal retentives!

Nobody here from Apple I'm afraid and they will not ry and rewrite the email world system in place of IMAP/POP behaviours.

As has been suggested above, Apple has been at the front of cloud computing and is pretty unlikely to take a cloud device like the iPad and nail the old hard disc POP folders to it IMO. Lose or damage your iPad and your mail is gone forever - all of it. Put it in the cloud and it'll never get lost.

Well I sent them feedback, I feel better! Like I said, there is a workaround to save to Pages, and then the Pages documents get backed up with syncing.
