Video Playlists on iPad's iPod application

Am I doing something wrong or are video playlists totally broken on the iPad? When you get to the end of a video podcast that was launched from a playlist, instead of it playing the next video podcast on the playlist like it does on iPods, iPhones and Apple TV, it just dumps you out to the "Videos" application. It appears that there's no way to play multiple video podcasts in a row without touching the device to launch the next one each time. No other Apple device works like this! (and shouldn't)

This is happening to me also, and my smart playlist for New Podcasts is broken because it doesn't update play counts with the video app. So my smart playlist still has a bunch of videos that it shouldn't have because I've watched them already. The videos app should have closer integration with the iPod app, or be combined in the iPod app again.

Although it isn't the perfect solution, which means you cannot watch the videos in your playlist one after another, you can watch videos from a single video podcast one after another by viewing the podcast in the Videos app and pressing the Play Button - see screen shot - http://twitpic.com/1inwvb.

Hopefully Apple will fix this. It sure would make watching video podcasts while I"m walking on the treadmill better. ;-D

If you play the video from the ipod app it simply goes to the video and stops playing it at the end and that is it. but i found a way to play the video play list very easily:

1. start the video playlist pressing shuffle that is on the top of the checklist
2. go out of ipod by pressing the home button, it will stop but restart it with the apple headphones with remote control, so that the music continues to play when you are not in the ipod app.
3. go to the video app and it will show the music video that is playing, you cannot skip to the next but if you wait until it finishes it will continue with another music video of the playlist, etc!!!!

one more thing hanlded!

interesting but true!!!

Try it!!!

none of the apple devices handle video's like this. We've got tons of appleTV videos and so it stinks when a video just stops playing like that and has no repeat, shuffle or playlist behavior. Goes back to the videos screen like everyone else reported. Some are even playing without video playback which is even stranger. Hopefully they fix this in the next update since it's why a few people bought the iPad- mice big screen for playing videos and podcasts...can't wait!

Solution found for the iPad!

Create a playlist for which the first song is an mp3, not a video. Make the rest videos.

Start the playlist in iPod, and press the home screen - for some reason this won't work if the song is a video first. However you can scrub forward before you press the home screen if you Ike.

WAIT FOR THE FIRST VIDEO TO START PLAYING. Then press the video app on the home screen, and it will start the videos playing. You can't forward to the next song, but you can scrub forward. Not that that is much use to you. However at least you can watch your video playlist at the gym right!

DomintheUK nice work around. I add a song to the video playlist on the iPad. The song is last in the video playlist. I started the song and then looped the playlist. Then followed your instructions and it work.

It's too early here, first cup of coffee and I didn't want to sync to the desktop. That's why I added the song the video playlist the way I did...

Oh my goodness! Thank you soooooooooo much for figuring this out, DomintheUK!!! It works!

The first time, I didn't follow your instructions exactly, and got the static image for the video. So, I went back and re-read what you wrote, and it works perfectly!

You really do have to click the home button while the mp3 (music only) is playing, AND WAIT for the video to begin playing (you'll hear it begin) before you can click on the 'Video' app... ....Which will then be playing the current video. After that, the videos play in the order of the playlist.

Remarkable!

But how crazy is it that you have to go through all that?!?!?

Thanks for posting the solution DomintheUK!!!!

Very clever solution - well done. I have no doubt Apple will fix this in a future software update, but until then, this will do fine.

What I've done is create a 3-second long silent MP3 file which I add at the start of every video playlist (and I've called it " .mp3" so it appears nameless in the Playlist!).

3 seconds is long enough to let you start playing the playlist, press the home button, and by then you're safe to start the Video app.
