Mobile versions of websites

That is an issue with the webpage designers. The iPad (I would imagine) is being reported as a mobile device, and as such, the webpages connect you to their mobile version if they have one. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page, usually they have a link to take you to the full site. That is something that has gone on with the iPhone and other mobile browsers for some time.

I have the opposite occuring. I tried to get the iPad to load the mobile versions of Google, CNN, ESurance, and AirTran and it automatically directs to the regular HTML site. There must be a setting that we are not seeing to change how the device is recognized by the website.

Really? Not mine. All of the web pages I hit come up as the normal ones, not the mobile or iPhone formatted ones. Seems to be working great for me!

A thought - are you using bookmarks that were synced from your iPhone through iTunes? In other words, when a mobile or iPhone formatted site comes up, is it because you clicked on a bookmark to get to that site? If so, maybe your bookmarks are all keyed to the mobile sites. Try just typing the standard URL into the address bar. So far, no sites I've visited on iPad Safari have come up as mobile-formatted sites.

The decision to feed you mobil sites is done at the server, there is no setting to change on the iPad.
Send feedback to the websites-tell them to cut it out.

As other poster pointed out-I am not having this issue, maybe you imported iPhone bookmarks as pointed out earlier.

This was discussed at great length when the iPhone first came out as people were complaining of being directed to mobile sites, feeling since they had regular browsers they should be going to the regular site. However, there is no setting on the device, nor anything anyone can get to in Safari to make those changes. As I said in an earlier post, the way around it was to normally scroll to the bottom of the site and there was usually a choice for you there. The University I attend specifically designed a streamlined site for iPhone users, which then supports the contention that it is at the website developer end.

There has to be a way....with the iPAD there is no reason to be slaved to the mobile sites. There are many newspapers that direct me to the mobile site and I don't have the option to browse the full content of the paper. It is very annoying, to a point that I am now back to my PC to browse some papers......hints????

Sensible sites (like the BBC News site) have a button somewhere that allows you to switch to and from the mobile version. Look around the home page for something like "view full site" or similar. Then bookmark that page.

I think this was discussed in another thread elsewhere, but I found two ways around this:

The first involves editing the url once the mobile version has loaded. Many sites have /iphone/ or /mobile/ as part of the url. I just delete this section and hit reload, and most timers this works.

The easiest way though is to get the app 'Atomic Browser' in the app store. It only cost a couple of quid (their is a lite version) but allows you to override websites that direct you to their mobile versions, and has full screen browsing, tabs, and numerous other settings. You can also set it to mimic Desktop Safari, Firebox, Ie6, and various others. I only had it a day, and have made it my main browser.

Saves a lot of woe, and is worth checking out.

The issue is with the web sites. They need to adjust their code to recognise the iPad correctly.

The iCab browser lets you set the browser id to the desktop version. Does that not solve the problem?
