iPad wont dock in iPad dock when it is in its case

Just got an ipad this morning and have to say that I love it except for two things.
1. once it is in the case, it is impossible to get it out of the case.
2. when it is in the case, it will not plug into the dock. the dock connector is too short since the case has a seam that protrudes out just enough.

first mod is to cut the opening in the case out more so that it can dock properly.

Good call, I just tried mine with the same results...Not willing to cut the case so I guess I will just be going through the painful removal process each time I want to dock it. My bigger problem is with charging...

I would like to know why my iPad will not charge from any of my computers. According to the tech specs - http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ - the iPad is able to charge from either "Charging via power adapter or USB to computer system" this does not appear to be the case.

Why would I want to charge this device and then hook it to my computer to sync...And why would they say that you can charge from the computer if you can't.

There's a thread about this very topic, and the solution is the "slice and dice" the Apple iPad case to expose the area that would otherwise come into contact with the iPad dock. However, I really find this dock rather superfluous, as it's easier (to me at least) just to plug in the cable that I share with my iPod Touch. Laying the iPad flat or propped up in it's case is easier than trying to finess it onto the dock.

However, I would like to get the optional iPad Keyboard Dock when it's available, mainly for typing purposes - since I know I'll be using this device more extensively in the future for writing purposes.

I would then recommend you return the case and find another one which allows you to more easily slip the iPad out of it when you need to "dock it".

The iPad dock is otherwise well-designed - but the case is easily replaceable.

Perhaps you might consider a "sleeve-type" case, which is zippered shut, as opposed to a true "glove-type" case. The ones they had were made of neoprene and in bright colors. That way, the iPad is easily removed (albeit exposed), but this makes for easy docking. Just my two cents worth ...

I had read the reviews of the Apple case before I purchased it. I knew about the problem with the dock, and went ahead and purchased the case and dock anyway.

This problem is caused by about an inch of the casing's protruding rubber edge on each side of the docking point, which prevents the socket of the dock from properly mating with the port of the iPad. I used an Exacto knife to simply slice off an inch of the protruding rubber edging on each side of the iPad's port, and the cased iPad now fits into my dock and makes a connection. I have been testing the connection, and it seems, so far at least, to be constant.

There is, however, a downside. The cutting away of those two inches of rubber makes my case no longer fit the bottom of the iPad as snugly as it once did. That could be the reason why Apple's designers preferred not to leave a three inch wide slot open for the dock. For me, it was a tradeoff -- a less snug fit in exchange for use with the doc.

Not trying to be difficult here, but I don't see why anyone needs or wants the iPad in a case to dock it. Why not just take it out and dock it? If you use the tablet a lot at home, then there's no reason to leave it in the case.

When my iPad comes (64GB 3G model), I plan on putting it on a cloth-lined end table in my room and use the USB cable to sync/charge. I bought Apple's case for travel purposes, but don't feel the dock is necessary. I may get one at some point just to have it on hand, but right now, it's not a big deal.

Hi, I just got the same problem. A solution would be a dock prong extender, female-male, perhaps with "feet" by the sides to give stability to this 'elevator' of an iPad within the Apple case or some else's case. The seam now impeding snug docking would not interfere with proper coupling. Problem is, I have not found it among offerings in the web. Does anyone knows of one? I truly believe taking the iPad every time you want to charge or prop up is a real pain.
