I've been fighting with iTunes a lot since the 9.1 update. Since the update I noticed that column browsing was acting really strange. It seemed to be skipping around in the artist browser on its own.

Now I can bring itunes up, but as soon as I try to do something it beach-balls, and eventually crashes.

I've done a complete reinstall. No change in behavior. There was an earlier post similar to mine, the solution was to reinstall Flip4mac. I just uninstalled Flip4mac prior to reinstalling iTunes. It didn't change anything.

Help! Thanks.

I am having more or less the same problem, also iTunes 9.1; also OS 10.6.3 but I have an Intel chip and yours is PPC? I thought PPC does noot run Snow Leopard.

Anyway I get the same general crash:

    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x00000000bf7ffffc
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

Thread 0 Crashed: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

At least we are not alone!

Here is a bit more info...

The crash happens when I have the column browser active with the 3 sub windows on top. If they are to the left there is no crash but window size of the interior windows cannot be adjusted. When Browser is on top, any mousing around in the top windows (trying to scroll down to an artist or readjusting the upper window size) invariably brings on the beach ball within about a second and it spins for maybe a minute. Then the application suddenly quits.

Other interface elements appear to work fine.

I recreated my iTunes Library. Same issues. I even managed a kernel panic at one point and had to force powerdown.

However, if I turn off column browsing iTunes seems to work okay.

Downside, recreating my library hosed the majority of my smart playlists, and wreaked all sorts of havoc. I've spent the entire day fixing/wiping out playlists, and fixing tags, etc. Very, very glad I still have my play counts, rating, and last played data.

I needed to 'clean house' anyway. Also a good excuse to try out the convert to 128 ipod sync feature as the 'new' library wiped out my ipod as well.

However, I could see how this would be a EXTRAORDINARILY inconvenient thing for users.

I haven’t tested this yet but I suspect that as long as you keep column browsing off you can use the old Library and whatever other files you may have removed and rebuilt. As long as you have not trashed and deleted the files that is!

PS - Now let’s wait for iTunes 9.1.1. Does Apple tech staff review these posts? If not, how do we tell the engineers of this issue?

I'm having a very similar issue, that just started today (I upgraded to 9.1 last week). Mine definitely seems tied to the column browser. If I have it displayed "on top" -- which I always do -- iTunes crashed every time I select something in any of the browser windows (album, artist, genre). If I have it displayed "on left" I don't have the problem. Mine doesn't seem related to my library though; I backup my library every morning, and even replacing the library after the crashing began with the pre-crashing library the crashing continues. I've Safe Booted, I've deleted the com.apple.iTunes.plist file, I've reinstalled 9.1 from a freshly downloaded copy, nothing helps.

Haven't tried recreating my iTunes library entirely though. Definitely don't want to; I have hundreds of playlists and close to 50,000 items in my iTunes library.

iTunes allows you to backup your library to XML; anyone know how to recreate a new library file FROM the XML export?

I wouldn't worry about your library. Just turn off column browsing. Mine was broken whether I used top or left. (I switched to 'on left' once given the option way back when... Seemed to make more sense everything being lists and all...)

Anyway, I used this to re-create my library. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 It kept tags, play counts, playlists contents, etc.

I did lose some tags on a few TV shows, and had to re-create a few smart playlists... Very minor stuff, everything else seems fine. (Right at 54k items myself) Needed to clean house anyway. So for all I know turning off column browsing alone won't fix it. I definitely recommend trying it first.

The delayed reaction seems odd though. Sounds like you and I both experienced crashes well after the initial update. The only thing I can think of that I've done after the update is add a few dozen songs to the library. At one point I rolled my iTunes back to a 'pre-crashing' state. It was fine again, until I added some songs.

I am having a very similar problem. iTunes is broken and crashes constantly.

I have tried rebuilding my iTunes library, reinstalling iTunes, deleting preferences, nothing works. Also tried repairing permissions

Turning off column browser doesn't change anything.

I can never see any song in my library and adding just one song at a time. Doesn't matter what I do I can never see any songs. Oddly, iTunes will play songs if I click play.

Here is what the crash reporter says:
