Can't move deleted messages to trash? Imap

I can send and receive via my imap email account on my iPad But when I try to trash or delete a message I get an error message that says "can't move messages to trash". Anyone else having this issue?

I can't move messages to any folder, including trash. It's an IMAP account, hosted at ICDSoft. Also, the setup screen where you can specify what folder will be used for Drafts, Trash, etc. doesn't show my folders as places to choose. I suspect this is all part of the same problem.

In these IMAP accounts all folders are sub-folders of INBOX, fwiw.

from another forum I found this bit

Go To
1. Settings
2. Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3. Click your (whatever account you have) account
4. Scroll down and click "Advanced"
5. Click "Deleted Mailbox"
6. Switch from "Trash" to "Spam" (at the bottom) then back to "Trash" at the top.

At first this didn't work for me. Then somewhere here I saw about creating folders on your imap webmail app. So I went to my webmail, created a folder, it was nothing special, just "keepers". The funny thing was this email folder didn't come up in the iPad's mailbox list. it was a subfolder of Inbox, and under Inbox, Inbox was listed. Anyway, once I had another folder, this trick about switching the deleted mailbox from Trash to that subfolder and then back again worked!!! I just deleted all the spam and facebook alerts. yay!

I have an SMTP mail account. Usually the delete works just fine, but recently I have four e-mails that I can't delete. I get the message, can't move to trash. I haven't found any way to clear them. I have a POP account that has a different problem. I use to be able to delete just fine, but now it messages delete and then reappear.

Thanks so much! This worked great for my iPhone. However, there were two things that I had to adjust:

1. After your step "3" I had to click on "Account" before I could scroll down to "Advanced".

2. I didn't have a "Spam" box, so I just clicked on the "Trash" box below and then back on the "Trash" box above, and it worked perfectly.

Thank you for your help.
