Q: Can You Sync .pages Files From Mac To iPad?

Can you sync .pages files from your Mac to your iPad? If so, how do you do it? Is there a tab in iTunes (Devices > iPad > ?) for doing this?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009, Week 47), 3.06GHz, 4GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.6.3), iPhone 3GS (16GB), Apple TV (160GB)

Go to Apps tab in iTunes, scroll down, add files in File sharing. Be sure they don't have special characters such as a slash. Finder doesn't mind but iTunes will give 'file not found' error if it does.

Thanks, but do you have to put the .pages files in a special folder? Can you add multiple folders of .pages files into iTunes? How does it work?

you do not need to create a special folder. you simply select each file and add it individually like you're uploading to a website. it doesn't sync with a folder like photos does. but you need to make sure the pages files on your computer are iWork09 docs or they won't open on the iPad.

Unfortunately this doesn't sync the documents unless you export every doc from pages. The iPad seems to keep a separate folder for importing and exporting documents to the iPad. This is what is used inside iTunes. When you save a pages doc on your iPad it gets saved to a different location. Only if you export does it write the file to the area that can be accessed via itunes.

I followed the directions you gave to add a pages file to the itunes, clicked "add," but I can't find the document on the ipad now. Was I supposed to click on "save to?" Or how do I find it on the ipad?

    Thanks!

I synced Pages docs using iTunes file sharing for several days, and now it refuses to sync the new Pages docs I added. The old ones are there, but newly added docs never get to iPad.

Have you taken the extra step of importing the new documents in Pages on the iPad? Here's the scoop:

In the MY DOCUMENTS view in Pages, there is a Folder icon in the upper right-hand corner. Tap that, and it brings up box called "IMPORT DOCUMENT." There, you should find a list of all the new documents waiting to be imported on the iPad. The downside is, if what you've imported is an update of a document you already have on the iPad, it does NOT overwrite the old version...It just adds the new version to MY DOCUMENTS. So, you need to manually delete the old version.

The whole process seems a lttle clunky to me, but there you are.

I sympathize with you. Same issue here. Syncing documents back and forth is so clunky. I think you to Have to delete the old versions of the document off the iPad before trying to sync them to the iPad. It seems it just will not overwrite an existing document. Very frustrating.

I just noted that this is an old topic but I will offer my own  EASY work-around.

Pages > Export (choose your desired format i.e. RTF etc) > send to DropBox

    VOILA!
