We have a Blu-Ray movie ("Sherlock Holmes") that came with digital copy (on a DVD) that I was able to copy to my iTunes library. But when I drag it to my iPad, I get the message that it won't copy because I'm not authorized to do so. Does this mean that there's no way to copy it to any iPad, or that I haven't properly authorized my iPad yet. If the latter, what should I do?

The movie needs to be converted to a format the the iPad understands.
Giving advice on how to do it is against the ToU of the forum however you may wish to search Google for handbrake.fr and take it from there.

This worked for me, on the one movie I tried. I didn't drag mine, I checked the box as a movie to sync on the Movies tab, but it synced and plays fine.

Those digital copies downloaded as part of a deal with a purchased DVD via iTunes are already authorized to be played on iPad, and they get formatted in the correct format when you select them to be synced to iPad... I also have several movies on iPhone that way and I just tried one on iPad and it works perfectly...

I got it to work. My iPad iTunes account was set to my son's, so I changed it to mine and the movie copied right over.

How to transfer Digital Copy Movies to iTunes

On a Mac with OSX Lion & iTunes 10 it is rather simple. No need to download other software. iTunes can do it for you.

Steps to transfer Movie to iTUnes and then iPod/iPad/iPhone

    1. Make sure you have iTunes 10
    2. Open iTunes
    3. Insert Digital copy movie disk into drive. It must be the disk labeled "Digital Copy"
    4. The movie will start playing in full screen mode. You want to minimize it to a smaller view on your desktop.
    5. Let the intro stuff on the disk playout
    6. You will then be presented with a Start Screen giving you different options (i.e., Set Up. Play, Scene Selection, & Digital Copy. Click Digital Copy
    7. It will then take you to a Digital Copy screen
    8. Click on the iTunes icon on your dock and launch back iTunes
    9. Digital Code redemption page should now apear. If it doesn't go to the left navigation pane and select "iTunes Store"
    10. It will ask for a redemption key. Enter the authorization code found on the authorization code that came with the disk.
    11. It takes approximately 6-10 minutes to transfer to iTunes.
    12. You can then "Sync" your device to transfer the movie to your favorite device.

    Hope this helps.
