Q: Intermittent WiFi

For some reason the iPad stops connecting to the internet even though it reports a strong wireless connection. If I restart it, it works fine. I have not been able to determine what causes it to stop working, but I suspect either the sync process, or maybe an iPhone app. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I can connect to my Airport just fine.... but I see the wifi symbol disappear and reappear at random. I have also gotten 'we can't connect' messages which I click through and then retry and it works on the second/third try.

It seems as though my iPad is simply dropping the signal and re-establishing it from time to time.

Not what I expected from such a (seemingly) well thought out product. It might also explain the sub par battery life I'm getting if it's always searching around trying to find other wifi, dropping mine and then going back....

And no, my iPhone nor my Mac Mini do that with my AirPort's connection. And all the other wifi in my neighborhood are secured so I am not connecting to them.

I have an airport extreme that works fine with my iphone and macbook(s). But my new ipad experiences a significant drop in signal strength as i move away from the airport extreme. Two rooms away and the signal degrades to one bar on the fan. My other apple computers and phones show a full strength signal in the same location. I've restarted all the equipment, and this does not seem to solve the issue. Hopefully it is just software related and there will be an update to correct it...

I solved the intermittent problem (so far) by changing the HTTP Proxy setting from "Off" to "Auto".

    Environment:
    o iPad 64GB WiFi
    o Linksys WRT54G in G-only mode, WPA-PSK2
o No other wireless networks configured on the iPad and no conflicting SSIDs, etc.

    Symptoms:
While surfing, writing, reading, using any app, I'll suddenly be prompted with a "Connecting..." popup. When I check, I have no bars on my wireless signal. The iPad then reconnects without a problem. Alternatively, while surfing or using mail, I'll notice that I'm not receiving data, notice I have no bars, go into settings, cycle WiFi, it finds my AP and reconnects.

This happens about 1-2 times per hour. I'm no more than 15' from my AP with a direct line of site. I'm usually using the iPad on my lap or holding it in the air (like a book or magazine). Holding the iPad up to the router pointing the Apple at it doesn't make it reconnect any faster. We don't have a microwave oven or anything else in the 2.4GHz spectrum and I am not using it in a room near any other rooms with appliances like refrigerators, etc. I've updated the router to the latest firmware, rebooted it several times and the problem persists. This problem occurs when I have no other wireless gear connected to the AP.

The router functions perfectly with every other device I have ever used with it (iPod G1, G2, iPhone 3GS, MacBook Pro, various Thinkpads, Dells, Sony VAIOs, etc). The AP is solid.

    What's the scoop?

Same problem - erratic, weak and intermittent wifi connection - this while all other devices are full strength (iPhone and MacBook)

The only problem I've had is that the WiFi sometimes does not reconnect if I start the iPad using the Home button. I've found that this does not happen if I start the iPad using the On/Button on top! Not sure why there is a difference.

I can help with that, mine is a Westell Ultralink3 Series, used with Verizon FIOS. My wifi keeps dropping also, it also asks for the wep key (10 digits) often, not evertime it drops and reconnects just a lot, I would say since I got the iPad on Saturday, I have had to put the wep key in 8 or 10 times.

I also have the sprint 3g/4g/ overdrive. I do not have to forget the connection; however, I do have to re-enter the password over and over.
tell me agin what you did, please?

FWIW - I had problems off and on all day yesterday - dropped connections, weak signal, etc. I called Apple Tech Support this morning and he ran me through several possible solutions involving resets of network connections and resetting the iPad back to factory settings. My iPad has been working ever since! I'm sorry that I can't remember all of the steps we went through - we were working on it for about 30 minutes or more. Maybe the key to the problem solution was that I made an appointment to take it in to the Apple store tomorrow so that I could return it. As soon as I did that, it started behaving itself. (BTW - I'm not sure about the OS, so what I have below may be incorrect.)

Reporting the same issue as well:

I had no trouble connecting to my wifi when I first set up my iPad. However, during periods of use the wifi connection drops and I get no internet connectivity. The only way to get connected again is to go into Settings > Wi-Fi and select my network again. Trouble is that it typically just gives me the washer machine graphic and then errors "Unable to connect to [my network]". I can try again and sometimes it connects right away and other times I try to connect 5-6 times and get nothing. Sometimes it asks me for my password which I enter in and that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

Overall the behavior is not consistent every time and I can't pin-point any activity that I'm doing that triggers the wi-fi drop. If I had to guess I would say it is some sort of battery saving feature that turns off wi-fi when not being used but I haven't yet determined when that kicks in and if it is related to any activity on my part.

I've got Verizon FiOS at home and my router is 802.11b/g (not n). All my other devices work like a charm including our Wii, my son's windows PC, both my iPhones, my wife's windows laptop, my iMac and my MacBook Pro. The iPad is the only device that can't seem to stay connect and gives me fits when trying to reconnect.

I am having problems with three different wifi scenarios: my home network (Linksys, which works fine with all other wifi devices, including iphones and ipods); Sprint Overdrive 3G/4G wireless hotspot (which works fine with all of my other wifi devices, including iphones and ipods); and free wifi service at a local restaurant (also which works fine with my other devices). Sometimes I lose the wifi connection. Sometimes I have a connection, but it is weak. Sometimes I have to re-enter the WEP code to access the network again. Lots of times web pages will stop loading - if I hit refresh it will finally load, but not quickly.

My wifi seems to have the same issue. In comparing my iPad I also use a iPhone 3GS two laptops one with n wireless one g wireless and a netbook with g wireless....all show signal as "great" and can pull over 20mg down from my wifi except my iPad which pulls a sad 2mg down on good tried but can be as slow as 300k....I'm hoping there is a fix for this and is just software that needs to be corrected......

Just want to say I'm experiencing the exact same behavior. Have iPad with sprint overdrive. Wifi works when security is turned off which isn't great considering I'm traveling and am in hotel. I have no problems on a non secure connection as on the airtran wifi I'm using now. Hoping Apple can fix this with just a software update!

I have been experimenting with various ideas raised so far, including turning security off and setting the routers to g only as indicated in the Apple tech note. Nothing makes a difference. The iPad still losses its ability to communicate with the router after awhile, even though it indicates full signal strength. Only turning wifi off, or turning the iPad off, and restarting clears the issue. This happens so often that the device is basically useless at the moment.
