Q: Intermittent WiFi

For some reason the iPad stops connecting to the internet even though it reports a strong wireless connection. If I restart it, it works fine. I have not been able to determine what causes it to stop working, but I suspect either the sync process, or maybe an iPhone app. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

MAC PRO, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

Apple support suggested iPad network reset - wifi now works perfectly.
The erratic and weak signal strength problem has gone away. I recommend everyone experiencing wifi problems try this.

I have the same issue. I have a relatively new Linksys router with up to date firmware and my other devices work just fine.

What kind of access point are you using?

I just tried the network reset suggestion twice over the last hour and it has not fixed the issue.

Belkin N, but set to use G only per the apple tech note. I also tried a Dlink G for an hour os so today with the same results. All other devices, including several wireless uPnP video streaming devices work fine.

Try setting the access point to mix mode, WPA2.

Is it hidden, or using MAC address filtering?

That is not an option for this router, only WPA, and 64 & 128 bit WEP. The ssid is broadcast, and I have reproduced the problem several times with security completely off.

So when you turn security off, the iPad just stops responding and the WiFi bars are gone from the status bar? If you go into settings/WiFi does it show a check mark next to your SSID?

Have you noticed this happens when a particular action is taken (i.e. loading a webpage, youtube, apps, etc?)

Actually, the status indicator still shows a strong signal, and the settings app shows that the iPad is still connected to the ssid. I turned security off and was able to reproduce the same situation several times this evening. I am now trying to systematically narrow down what exactly reproduces the situation, but it appears so far that when the device comes out of power save mode it has lost it's ability to use the connection.

Apple support said if iPad network reset did not work then try doing a hard restore on the iPad - restoring all OS software thru iTunes. They claim that solves most of the problems.

interesting...are you getting a 169 IP address when you click the blue arrow next to the SSID or a valid IP?

I will check again on the next reoccurrence, but I believe it shows the valid DHCP address it was using up to that point.

At least for my issue, I have now proven that waking the device by only using the Sleep/Wake button versus the Home button, has no effect on the problem. This was stated as a possible workaround in an earlier post.

Here's what I've learned and the temporary compromise I've made to keep my sanity. Like everyone here, I have experienced the WiFi connection loss on my iPad.
I have a Sprint Overdrive 4G/3G WiFi. My iPhone gets along with it just fine in every security mode. But My iPad only likes it without any security turned on. Now that it's all turned off, the iPad's WiFi connection holds on for a good long while. I was experiencing a similar issue with my ActionTech router from Verizon at home.

Here is the specific troubleshooting storyline. The initial symptom I experienced was that I would be surfing, watching a video, or downloading an app when the fan symbol would disappear and what I was doing would freeze.
When I would go into the settings menu, the network would not be connected and if I searched for it, it would appear right away. My WiFi router's front panel showed that it's signal was stable with Sprint's network. I was connected to it via a WEP password, which I have used for sometime with my iPhone.
When I attempted to rejoin the network, I would be rejected. The only way to reconnect was to "forget" my WiFI and renter the password. Then i would go back to way surfing, viewing, etc. and the connection would be dropped again in a few minutes.
Suspecting the security mode settings, I tried without any security. After much to-ing and froe-ing, I was able to get everything reconfigured. My iPad works perfectly in this mode and has not dropped a connection since early this morning.
Because I don't want to run my wireless networks without security, I tried both WPA and WPA2. They each exhibited identical behavior to WEP mode.

Until Apple gets this security issue resolved, I have to compromise my home and road WiFi security. That's not acceptable for me.

Sorry for the large quote, but this is just what's happening to me as well. It just drops the connection randomly - often enough to be annoying, forcing me to "re-discover" the network and re-enter my password. I have a DIR-655 router, a pretty common model. I stream video from Netflix to my Playstation a floor down in the far corner of the basement with no problems, and music to my stereo at same location via an Airport w/no problems. My iPad drops connection one wall away where the iMac is receiving a perfect full-strength signal.
