just came back from the Apple Store in Ft.Worth. Had an appointment at the genius bar and to my surprise they were able to immediately replicate my problem.
We did the restore, then tested it in youtube ... and bang... it froze with flickering pixels and all the "fun" things I experienced over the weekend.

The "genius" stated that it's a H/W issue and swapped my ipad against a new (?) brown-boxed one.
The one out of the brown box seemed to be factory packaged and it should not be a refurbished one (at least that's what he told me). i did a brief in-store check for dead pixels and other things... the unit has an excellent build quality and i wasn't able to find any dead pixels nor dust under the display. so far so good.

I'll test my new ipad extensively tonight and let's hope the frozen video issue doesn't come up again.

anybody else who has gotten a brown-box ipad as a replacement unit??
are those refurbished ones or just factory units produced as replacement units? it seems to be very early in the production cycle to already have refurbished units....

the serial number for my new pad is very odd. it starts with AK and

doesn't give me a factory. produced week 14 in april. wonder if the brown boxed ones are pre tested and produced in a different factory?

I too am experiencing the video freezes. For me it happens in MLB. Last week I swapped my non-3G for a 3G during the two week exchange period. The non-3G didn't have this problem. The first time it happened it was late at night and I just decided to plug in the unit and go to bed. The next morning when I got up the unit was critically low on battery. It seemed to be so wedged that it didn't even see the power. I called Apple Care and they talked me through a re-boot. It looks like I'd better get this in for replacement. Sigh.

Yes, I totally agree with you. This is absolutely a hardware issue. That's why Apple is swapping these out for new units. If you are getting a system freeze up requiring a hard reset while watching video, run, do not walk, to the closest Apple store and get a replacement while you can. If they give you any static about not knowing anything about this issue, insist that they research their tech notes online and they will find the issue and give you a replacement.

My problem seems to be a little different. I have a 32Mb 3G. When watching YouTube it freezes every 5 or 10 seconds but I don't have to do a reset. I can continue to press the play button and it will play for another 10 seconds etc. It has never frozen the whole iPad. Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be an issue with my wi-fi or...should I return it for a new one?

Still having the same freezing issue with the replacement Ipad 64G 3G.And it came out of a brown box. Spoke with Apple Care this morning and they are going to replace this one now too. Supposedly I was told that the issue has been fixed...We have to wait and see to believe...

i ran 2+ hrs of netflix streaming on my "new" brown box replacement ipad and nearly one hour of ABC streaming. no issues so far.

if it should be indeed a H/W issue (what i suspect - given the fact that i restored the new ipad to the exact same settings/apps as my old one) ... then it would be interesting to know how many units have the fault. sounds pretty expensive for Apple to swap all those units and either repair them or write them off.....

I'm really glad that i got my replacement ipad... wonderful machine. i'm still impressed how good the battery is.... nearly 3 hrs of wifi-video streaming with moderate display brightness and still a solid 80% of the battery charge left. the ipad will be my future travel buddy and the macbook pro stays at home

This is simply a network congestion problem or a problem on the Youtube server. You may have some problems in your local network but it is impossible to say much without any details of what you have for a router, ISP, etc. You could get the speedtest app to check your network download times.

Hi, there, FlyingAApple, I too got mine swapped out for a new one due to the freezing issue. I did have to go back twice bcz the first time with the genius the video played fine and went on longer than I had experienced so I figured maybe it was my router. I decided to buy an apple extreme (my net gear was an older model anyway so I figured it wouldn't hurt either way). Well the problem continued after I got home (but my wifi signal was way better and the connection is immediate). So I decided to go back yesterday and explained to the genius that I've done all the troubleshooting and even got a new router but still was having the problem. The decided it was time to swap it out. Yes, my replacement came out of a brown box packaging. I did ask if they were refurbished units and they assured me they weren't that they have two stocks of ipads, one for sale the other for replacement.

After I got home with the new iPad I set it up and got going again. I spent most of the day viewing videos on Abc player and CNN and it was all good. Now (for me) my ipad is perfect!!!

I hope everyone having the freezing issues has their issue resolved like I did.

Here are the results of my speed test - please let me know what this means!

Also....this is not just a YouTube issue. When I try to play the iPad videos on the Apple website, the same thing happens. The videos stop after every 2-5 seconds, then I press play again, and so on and so forth! Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, there. I have same problem when playing streaming video.I'm using Air Video and whenever I play the movie clip, my iPad freezes and I have to reboot it. Do I have to swap it? Is it really a H/W problem? Is there any possibilities that it's a S/W problem, such as firmware, so I can fix the problem by updating the firmware. The worst thing is that I'm not in the U.S. now. I'm in Korea and have to stay in Korea by September!! Please somebody help me!!

Those numbers are not what I would call normal. A download speed of 1 Mb and an upload speed of 2.5 Mb? 1 Mb is fairly slow in this day and age and usually the upload speed would be much lower than the download. 1 Mb can stream low-res video OK, but not higher-res video. What type of Internet connection do you have? Another big problem is your latency. 1.6 seconds! That's pretty huge. Combine that with only 1 Mb download and, yeah, you are going to have starts and stops streaming video.

My suggestion, take the iPad to some location with a hotspot (Apple Store?) or a friend who has WiFi. Try it there, run your speedtest and if it looks better (download number higher, latency number lower) try streaming some video and see if it doesn't run better.

Regardless, this is a different issue from the lock ups people are having in this thread.

Ok now this is interesting. I'm not sure if it was a fluke, a glitch in the matrix, or just pure coincidence, but my iPad has amazingly stopped locking up during video playback :)! If any one recalled a few pages back, I was the guy who took my iPad back to the Apple store to get a replacement unit, which in turned still had the issue, so I brought it back and geniuses restored it back to factory settings and yet the issue still persisted. So I was finally able to scheduled another appointment this morning for a 3rd visit but last night I decided to do a full restore myself just to make sure everything is cleared out and ready to turn in. But just for the **** of it, I decided to load up a show on the ABC app one more time to get it to lock up so i can just bring it there to show them.

Strangely, it played all the way through and no lockups! I thought I might of just got lucky so I load up another show and it played through again. Ok, so then I'm tested out the YouTube app and stream several different clips and amazingly, still hasn't locked up either. My next test was using The Weather Channel app to watch one of the shows on there and it played through. But i'm still not convinced that I'm totally cure of this issue yet so my final test tonight will be with Netflix...

I'll update everyone on my results tonight!

Does it mean I need a new router? How do I speed things up? Sorry to ask in this thread...but I can't seem the find the answer elsewhere, and since you seem to know what you are talking about, maybe you can point me in the right direction? Thank you!
