    My iPad would lock up on the ABC app as well as YouTube. Since I knew it would freeze with ABC, that was the app I used to demonstrate the problem at the genius bar. Got a brown-box replacement on the spot.

    They ran their little "diagnostic test," and it didn't show any problem with videos freezing; luckily the genius witnessed it. He didn't know why the diagnostic test didn't show the issue, since clearly there was one...

    After a month of continued use, my iPad just completely froze up while playing a video using the internal video player (not in Safari or AirTunes).

    The video kept playing, but the controls and iPad itself became unresponsive. Finally, the video controls came up and I was able to stop the video and go to the Home screen. Then nothing again. None of the icons worked and I couldn't drag to the next screen of apps.

    If I did a hard reset, the Apple logo just stayed on screen forever.

    I finally had to do a system restore which took forever.

    Very disappointing Apple! Your hardware is great when it works, but terrible when it is buggy and defective. This is as maddening as my 24" Cinema Display that keeps blacking out every 30 minutes.

    This happened to me since day 1.
    Took my iPad (while being frozen) to an Apple Retailer Store and they confirmed it is a hardware issue. They gave me a new iPad from a brown box which works like a charm now.

    I replaced had myiPad a week ago because of a bad screen. This ipad has the very same issues with playing videos as the one I had before the exchange. If it were a hardware issue Apple would have a recall on it's hands. I tend to think it's a software issue.

    I have a genius appointment booked for tomorrow, but yesterday and today something strange has been happening. Yesterday morning, I restored my iPad, proceeded to set it up as a new device and then I loaded all my content (music, apps and some tv shows) back onto the iPad. Since I did this, my freezing problem seems to have disappeared. Normally I wouldn't be able to get through a streaming video without the device freezing, but now I have been streaming many tv shows using BBC iPlayer and also have watched some Youtube HD videos without one single incident.

    I am now unsure as what to do... Do I still go to my (second) genius appointment tomorrow or do I cancel it? If my iPad continues to play videos properly without freezing, the issue may well be related to a software problem and not a hardware problem as previously thought? Knowing my luck, I'll cancel my appointment for tomorrow and five minutes later the freezing will return!

    If it were me and the screen on the iPad looks great and there are no other issues. I would cancel the appointment. My second iPad still has problems playing videos, it's not that bad. Other than that it looks works great.. I can wait for the firmware update.

    I am also having the video lockup issue with my iPad. I get almost immediate lockup on the ABC app, and it locks up occasionally on YouTube. I've only locked up once while watching Netflix. I have restored twice per Apple tech support, and then sent the iPad back to Apple for replacement. Their techs couldn't duplicate the problem, and sent back the same unit. I just got it back and tried out YouTube (locked) and ABC (locked). This really ****** me off! Apple is hopefully having software issues that can be repaired. We primarily purchased for streaming video use!

    As an experiment, try watching video in landscape mode (full screen) without any text showing. I seem to have much less frequent lockups when viewing this way. When I watch the ABC app in portrait mode with the text on the bottom, it locks up in a minute or two.

    I cancelled my genius appointment for yesterday after my previous post in this thread, but then this morning the freezing started again. I immediately booked a genius appointment for this afternoon and took the iPad into the store in it's frozen state. As this was my second genius appointment, the genius saw the iPad and replaced it no questions asked. I am now syncing my new iPad, so fingers crossed when I try and stream video again the problem will have gone.

    Utterly useless for video. I have a pile of .mp4 files I ripped from DVDs that I'd like to watch on my iPad. I can play then on my iPod Touch without a problem. On my iPad, I get about 5-10 minutes of playtime before I get a complete lockup that only a hard reset will fix.

    With NetFlix, I can watch about 20 seconds of video before I get a 60 second pause, then another 20 seconds of video. I am not happy with this at all.

    Now that I see how many other people are having this problem, I am going to call support and see what my options are.

    I am essentially convinced it is hardware on the earlier iPads. Just got back from swapping mine out this weekend. The Genius at my local store had not heard of this issue, and tried to persuade me to take it back home and try hard resets, SW restores, and safe mode tests. I remained firm on having the unit replaced (it helped to bookmark this thread when I went in for my appt).

    Since replacing, I have had ZERO issues with any video freezes, to include Netflix, iTunes downloaded shows, Youtube, ABC player, etc. Previously, I would have had a guaranteed freeze within at least 10 minutes.

    I hope this helps, and I hope this is eventually acknowledged as a HW issue.

    Same problem with mine - WiFi 32GB. It freezes after about 2-5 minutes, while I'm watching video online or offline.
    I called Apple Support last week and reported the problem. The guy (who was actually very nice and cooperative) said they don't have anything official on their Apple database, BUT he said he knew about this problem from THIS topic.
    I was told to go to the nearest Apple Store (which for me is Munich) and if I can replicate the problem in front of a Apple Genius, I will most likely have it replaced on the spot. It will take about a month until I can get to the Apple Store (I'm in Romania now) but I so look forward to going there. It's frustrating to watch a video, knowing it will freeze, sooner or later.

    I seem to be having a slightly different problem. I'm not freezing up entirely. When playing streaming content (from youtube, mostly, and safari), the audio and video halt, but the playback controls continue to function. the 'time left' continues to count down on the video, the line showing how much of the video has elapsed continues to move to the right. I can exit the app and come back in, but the only way to get the audio and video to start again is to reload the video or browser page. I'm not dead in the water by any means, but it's getting more and more frustrating. Any thoughts?
