iPad charging

By plugged in to a socket, do you mean an AC outlet or a USB port?

This tells me you are not using a wall outlet...USB charging is not recommended for iPad

Where did you come up with these numbers?

I haven't charged using USB but with the charger Apple ships, I went from 15% to 100% in way less than 4-5 hours.

It might be simply that it's not recommended for speedy re-charging. Obviously, you can charge it that way if you like.

At 20%, the battery level is red and there is an alert message ... didn't want to go below 15%.
After three hours on the wall, I've gone from 15% to 75%. Seems slow. Apple says, "a few hours."
I'm wondering if there is a difference between putting it to sleep vs. turning it all the way off for charging?
Is it OK to just plug it in all night? -Thanks

Should be little difference between sleeping and turning it off. There should be no problem keeping it charging over night - modern battery technology doesn't let the battery overcharge. Indeed, my iPhone sits on its charger overnight and wakes me up in the morning with music and a full charge.

Actually, depending on your computer, you may not be able to charge the iPad via USB.

Most Windows PC cannot charge the iPad via USB unless the iPad is off or asleep.

Modern Macs on the other hand should be able to but NOT from the keyboard connection, only from plugging directly into a USB port on the Mac itself.

Charging time depends on wether the iPad is in use or not and the method used to charge it. Charging from the included AC adapter is quickest, average charge time 2 to 4 hours when not in use, though it can take longer if the iPad is really low on battery power.

I can confirm this from personal experience. I leave the device plugged in on an older PPC G5 to allow it to "trickle charge" while participating in this forum so as yo refer to it as needed in contributing responses.

I have found then when plugged into my mac, it shows charging initially but then when i come back in the room, it says "not charging" where the battery icon is. I assume because my computer is asleep, so best to us the outlet charger I guess. Strange since my iphone will charge even when my computer is asleet using the same usb port.

When I plug my iPad into the computer I get this from "About This Mac...". This seems to indicate enough "juice" is there, but the iPad never-the-less says "Not Charging". Oh well. Plugging it in overnight to a wall socket is no big deal. (But I wish it would charge from the MacBook anyway !!!!!)

Yes, it will show you the connection, but the juice needed to charge is not there...iPad needs a full 10Watts to offer best results...USB ports, even powered ones do not have that much to offer...
