I tried using the iPad this morning at Boston Logan airport on the Logan Free WiFi. The WiFi network makes you sign in, but instead of the standard browser, the iPad opening some odd screen with no ability to keep signed in. As soon as I closed the acceptance screen, the WiFi signal notation disappeared.
I'm wondering if this is related to the issue I'm having at my work. I work at a hospital and we have a guest wifi network for patients and guests to use. To connect you choose the guest network and it connects and then that screen slides up where you would normally hit the accept box or enter a login. At our hospital you have to enter a login. Once you enter the login and hit submit it just sits there. You can see the wifi activity indicator on top of the screen showing it's doing something but it never finishes the process and moves on past this screen.
I don't know a solution, but I can tell you what (I think) the problem is. If you choose the 'free wifi' option, you then have to watch a sponsor's ad, which I'm guessing is in a format that is not iphone and ipad friendly. It seems crazy that there's no workaround for it, though, considering it affects so many people.
Similar problem in the Athenste airport in Greece. The free site used Flash but they had a HTML version. But most buttons, including the Internet button did not work. One of the links for the Site Map did work so I expect that it was bad programming on their part.
On another note, my iPad will not connect to the Orange WiFi in my rental apartment. The box will not accept my password. Seems previous renters have had no problems.
I am very disappointed with my iPad as ao device that I can use while traveling. Away from my computer, I cannot organize my pictures. I am just adding to my list.
Check carefully the acceptance screen. Usually there is a check box to accept their T&Cs and hit enter. Then the screen closes automatically and your connected otherwise the WiFi just disappears.
User names and passwords are case sensitive. Since it appears you actually have to enter this information (not typical on open hotspots), you have to get it "right".
