Built in SD Card Reader Stopped Working

I have been using the built in SD Card Reader on my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2009) with numerous SDHCs--from Class 4s to 6s, from Kingston to generic ones. Today it stopped working for no reason. A few days ago, I needed to reinsert a card multiple times before my laptop recognized it. Today, it stopped recognizing the card at all--no errors whatsoever.

But when I use an external card reader, my MBP is able to mount it. I tried numerous cards, but no luck: all are unmountable from the built in card reader but readable from my DSLR or Wii or USB card reader. Could I have a faulty built in SD card slot? Repairing permissions didn't help. I ran a quick AHT but didn't find any errors. I'm doing an extended test in Apple Hardware Test at the moment.

For the skeptics, yes I made sure that the cards were inserted properly. I recently upgraded to 10.6.3 if that makes any difference. I hadn't had this problem in 10.6.2.

You could have a faulty slot, aluxious.

Have you tried inserting the card in the slot as quickly as possible, rather than gently, though. I've found a couple of mine at least don't mount if I insert them too slowly. ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553 seems to confirm the need for this).

Checked with various cards, and made sure the contacts on the cards are clean and undamaged, I guess?

Cheers

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the response. All my cards are working fine on my other gadgets. They're also readable via an external USB card reader.

I've read that article and tried to insert the cards quickly to no avail. I'll try to exhaust all possibilities first before dropping by or calling Apple.

By the way the extended AHT didn't show any problems as well.
