iMovie won't see Canopus ADVC-55

Here's the set up. I have my JVC DR-MV80 VCR/DVD Player on my desk. Hooked up to it is my Canopus ADVC-55.

I have plugged in a power adapter to the Canopus. I bought a 6 pin to 9 pin firewire cable to connect the Canopus to the iMac.

Previously on my mother's computer I would use just the 6pin to 6pin wire and I was able to convert video to the computer easily.

System Profiler indicates that the Firewire Bus Max speed is Up to 800 Mb/sec

iMovie '09 simply doesn't see anything. Anytime I try to import it only sees my computer's built in web cam.

Someone please help! I'm frustrated beyond belief.
