.dcm file?

I have a .dcm file per song, sometimes 2 or 3 .dcm files per song. I have a smaller hard drive and want to save as much space as possible. With that in mind, I have 2 questions:
1) do .dcm files take up a lot of space?
2) are .dcm files necessary to play music in iTunes if I have the song file?

The .dcm files are put there by certain backup software, to record what version of the related file has been backed up. They are very tiny compared to music files, so don't worry about space.

The .dcm files are not necessary for iTunes to play music. However, backing up music is very important to not losing your music to a future hard drive crash.
