Dovecot mail_max_userip_connections Settings

My mail users have ridiculous amounts of nested folders, it just what they do. Older Apple Mail clients are not well behaved regarding making lots of connections in this type of situation, it seems to happen when the client is trying to synchronize. Apple Mail on snow Leopard seems to be better behaved, FWIW.

When these large number of folder users on old Apple Mail connect, they can exceed the default connection limit per ip "mail max_useripconnections" frequently, and dovecot will kick them off requiring them to enter their password to reconnect. I changed it from the default 5 to 100, but am unsure how it might affect the other tunable parameters. Can anyone with experience shed any light on this?
