"Required file cannot be found" when syncing photos

I'm getting the "The iPad "iPad" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found" when syncing my photos. Everything else seems to sync successfully. I was able to sync my photos a couple of times until I started to delete some photos, change album names, move pics around in albums and merge/rename events. I've emptied my trash to get rid of the deleted photos.

When the library does seem to "update" on the iPad, I have some seemingly empty spots on Faces where I've deleted photos from the original photo sync-- if I touch there, the old name comes but the photo is gone.

I also just received the "required file cannot be found" message. Not sure at what point in the sync. All the top status bar says is "Syncing...".

Syncing seems to be a tedious error prone process with the iPad. On plugging the iPad in, iTunes starts displaying the spinning beachball of death for 5 minutes before the iPad displays "Syncing" and then another few minutes before it shows up in iTunes.

Certainly not what I would have expected.

I called Apple and talked to a senior tech who had me fix the problem. The problem is with the ipod photo cache.

He had me do the following:
1. go to home folder in finder
2. open pictures folder
3. right click on iphoto library and click on show package contents
4. Find "ipod photo cache" file and drag to desktop
5. Close finder
6. Reopen itunes and sync ipad
7. The ipod photo cache rebuilds itself

This resolved my issue.

Have you ever transferred photos from iPhoto to an iPod and/or iPhone?

When transferring photos to an iPhone or iPad, photos are optimized for viewing on the device as part of the iTunes sync/transfer process, which creates the iPod Photo Cache. If the cache gets corrupted for whatever reason, the error message will be the result.

I've been transferring photos from my iPhoto Library to two iPhones for nearly 3 years now and I haven't experienced the same yet. This includes making changes to photos in my iPhoto library, adding/removing photos from iPhoto albums selected to be transferred to the iPhones, etc.

This is not something that should be required on a regular basis.
