How to write with finger?

Last night at an Apple store, I tested out one of the iPad on display. While I was using the YouTube app, I clicked on the search box at the upper right corner. To my surprise, instead of a keyboard a write box popped up at the bottom. So with my index finger I wrote a Chinese character and it successfully recgonized what I was trying to write. It then went on with the search and I found the youtube videos I want. This feature sold me the iPad on the spot.

After I came home I tried to set my iPad up with this feature (the write box) but I cannot find it anywhere in settings. Please help.

Its not for drawing as such but is for the input of Chinese characters when set up to write in Chinese.

If you change the localisation settings to Chinese it will appear but all the rest will change to Chinese language and good luck changing it back!

Settings > General > International > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Chinese Simplified Handwriting

PS If you need something that does more than Chinese, search the app store for "handwriting"

Not necessary -- the handwriting input can be activated on its own from the Keyboards settings.

ummm...where? How? The keyboard seetings only allows you to choose language and keyboard. I see nothing about handwriting anywhere....please help.

Read my post above - its only for hadwriting in Chinese. Change language to Chinese.

So if you change the keyboard to Chinese the writing area appears.

So you are telling me that when you poke the button that says ADD NEW KEYBOARD you really do not see there on the list one that says Chinese Simplified Handwriting?

Change language to Chinese.

Do you really need to change the OS language to Chinese to see this in the Add New Keyboard list? I certainly don't.

Thanks for all your help. Tom has it right, the "writing with finger" feature is for Chinese (Simplified) only. For some reason I was under the impression it is for all supported languages, so I didn't pay enough attention to the international keyboards section in the setting.

MY 12 year old son has found a way......

1) download app called stylus

2) in settings>general>keyboard, select stylus and the option that is something like 'allow access to everything'

4) when there is keyboard, select the globe, then stylus

5) then write on the blue dotted line and the handwriting recognition turns it into typed text.

I typed points I-5 but used stylus for this last section. They key is timing and patience-dont try to squash the letters together at the end of the line. Luckily there is a delete or backwards button,
