No problem, and I've encountered that too - where you have to select something but it doesn't list what you have. iOS4 for iPad is available to developers as a beta, and is rumoured to ship in September. It has quite a lot of new stuff, including the ability to put multiple icons into a folder and (supposedly) improved backup times. Absolutely nothing else I've tried has worked in the long term (a lot of suggestions seem to work simply because I've done another backup), so I'm counting on iOS4. In the meantime I'm running an "auto backup switcher" prior to connecting my iPad to iTunes. I'm feeling much more relaxed since I started doing that

    Cheers.

Aplle isn't fixing the problem because it's not being reported in the media and thus not affecting sales. You want this issue rsolved start complaining to magazines, teck shows on TV, make it into a major new story and they will have to react to the negative press about their latest product line.

    That's one cynical view...

But I need to repeat what was said previously:

    1. Saying "I haven't encountered the problem" doesn't help. Enough people other than you have encountered it and you should consider yourself lucky.

    2. Saying "I did XXX and the problem went away" doesn't help. Enough people have tried what you've done and had the symptoms persist to indicate that you were lucky enough to get past a "bad point" in your sync.

    3. Saying "I uninstalled/reinstalled XXX or disabled backup" is a very temporary workaround. Thanks, but we'd like to install arbitrary apps and backup reliably and regularly.

    4. Possibly there is more than one problem at work here. My problem is traceable to some difference between 32 bit windows and 64 bit windows. On 32 bit windows, Apple runs two 32-bit apps to do the backup. On 64 bit, they run a 32-bit app and a 64 bit app. I'm willing to wager that there are hidden implementation dependencies with the 32-bit/64-bit code and would require an iTunes update. And, no, Apple, I have not disassembled your code.

While leaning on Apple via the press seems tempting (I could imagine a headline "Apple declines to fix problem in iTunes for Windows to maintain market share") but we should continue to lean on Apple directly (and courteously). I believe that is the best way to have them address the problem.

Correction for point (4). iTunes has only 32-bit code running. My conclusion still stands that it is an iTunes issue and not an iPad/Windows issue.

I totally agree with you ..... Look what happened with the Iphone 4 and the none issue about the reception problem...Apple continue to say that it is not a problem, but yet they provided bumpers to all iPhone 4 owners. Just because the media was involved.

We have given Apple lot of opportunity to fix this problem. I personally have been giving ideas and pointers where to look, but still nothing from Apple after 5 to 6 months of asking for any response. Not even a "we are looking into it. Or we found the problem and working hard to fixed on the next release of the OS. or iTunes.

If the media gets involved, you will see results.

I think the problem is both iTunes and the OS. Since people including me, stated that we had the same apps on the iphone and the ipad, yet the iPhone sync in matter of minutes. and the iPad hours.

When the iphone 3g came out it had the same issue and if I remember correctly Apple provided an OS update. I do not remember if they also updated iTunes.

One applciation I use ( Video Locker) now has a switch to turn off backups for files in use by that app. That has helped. My backup used to take 48 hours. It appears it will only take 24 or so!!

Apple where are you? How hard can this be to fix?

However, the iPad won't get an update until November.

Maybe there's a chance iTunes 10 will solve the problem. It's supposed to be available today, but it wasn't available for download just yet.

I downloaded iTunes 10 immediately to see whether the backup issue has been resolved, it seems better, took 40 minutes for something that took 1 hour before. Not really conclusive. Anyone else with a more drastic before/after data please share.

it took me a while but i have figured out that any of ngmoco's we games (we rule, we farm) are causing my ipad to take hours apon hours to back up. its because they make you download some data for content. i emailed them and they said i had to take it up with apple so who do i talk to...????

Short of starting with an identical backup scenario each time, I'm not sure how we can ever relate the duration of one backup with another. My backups are consistently long, in fact they are unusably long. It may well be because I've got subscriptions to several newspapers, book readers and magazines (including Zinio). But nothing I've tried has obviously reduced the backup time to anything near reasonable.

My experience with iTunes 10 running on Windows 7 x64 is this - after 13 1/2 hours I was only 25% complete and I abandoned the backup. My iPad is a 64GB wi-fi model with 5.4GB audio, 2.5GB video and 12.8GB apps plus sundry. Free capacity is 37.6GB.

Others have given a good account of what the backup process is doing, but I decided to have a look using Microsoft Sysinternals Process Monitor. The AppleMobileBackup.exe process is doing some odd stuff - looking at every connected drive before it goes and writes to the backup location. I've 9 drives with 4 being USB, so I disabled all the USB drives expecting a miracle. There wasn't one. The backup was still progressing like cold treacle. I've got fast disks. CPU and memory were not at all taxed. So I am stumped. My iPod Touch backups have been very fast since updating to iOS 4, so I have my fingers and toes crossed for iOS on my iPad.

After reading 15 pages of testimonials and myself an iPad owner with direct experience, the reality is just too plain obvious even a new Apple fan like me can no longer be in denial: iTunes backup for iPad has the quality of a highschool project, barely works, shoddy quality, mainly for education purpose. Sad. Very sad.

The People Magazine App causes slow backups also. Everytime you download a new issue of the magazine its a 6 hours backup. I removed the app and the backup was back to 5 mins.

Wow..this continues to be an unacceptable situation...I thought the new iTunes would correct this issue but as most have noticed it has not...I stopped the backup after 2 hours...this is AFTER the iTunes update...

I have never experienced a 5 minute backup time nor anything close to being measured in minutes, if certain Apps are causing the issue isn't that crazy?!?...doestnt Apple every day tout how the App store is the best thing since sliced bread?? But don't install CERTAIN Apps...and which ones those are you need to guess because they will deteriorate your iTunes session into something that is measured in days not minutes....

    FIX THIS PLEASE APPLE!
