Apple shipped me an empty box?

I received my iPad on Sat, but had to wait till today to receive my case. I opened the box my case was shipped in and the only thing in my box was the air bubbles and a receipt for shipment.....but no iPad case. How do you ship an empty box? I called apple and they will ship me a case when their next shipment arrives in LATE April! It's on back order now. Did apple over sell and decide to ship me a box just to say they shipped something knowing I would call and get it squared away later? I just don't see how you can intentionally ship an empty box.

They didn't intentionally ship you an empty box. Was the box sealed when you received it? If not, then it might have been taken during shipment. If it was sealed, something may have happened in the factory during packing. It *****, but it unfortunately happens every so often. It sounds like they are taking care of it. I expect that you will likely get it earlier, but "LATE April" sound like such a long time when you type it, but my calendar says that may be only two or three weeks.

After looking at the box more, there's 2 strips of clear tape over the top of the box, the bottom only has 1. This is definitely a FedEx employee stealing the contents. I HIGHLY recommend that if you sign for your package open it immediately. They shipped the cover for it 2 days prior so it probably tipped off my delivery person.

This was not Apple at all and they're still taking care of me.
