Error Code (-61)

I have a FreeAgent 1TB hard drive that I've been using for a little while. I recently put some files on there and I tried to delete a file so I right clicked and the "move to trash" wasn't there. Then I tried dragging it to the trash and I got this error code: Sorry, this operation could not be complete because an unexpected error occurred. (error code -61).

How do I fix this issue?

That error is:

wrPermErr = -61, /*write permissions error*/

indicating that the permissions are mucked up. You could try getting info on the HD and enabling the ignore permissions on this volume, trash the files, and disable the option. Then, you can address the permissions issue.

I just checked to do that and it said that "You can only read" it.

So what do I do about that? Everything was working up until now so I don't know how anything got messed up.

+Launch the Terminal in /Applications/Utilities/ and enter the following:+

+*chmod 775 "/Volumes/volumename/"*+

+Replace volumename with the disk's actual name. If you don't know what the disk's name is, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's path. Locate the item corresponding to that disk and drag it into the Terminal window; in this case, omit the quote marks and all text between them in the existing commands.+
