WiFi dropping connection in OSX but NOT in Windows 7

Howdy.

I have a 17" Unibody MacBook Pro which is about 2 months old; which I use on several WiFi networks (home and several different networks at work).

I also bootcamp the mac with Snowleopard and Windows 7 (64bit).

When running Snowleopard, the WiFi connection will periodically drop and then reconnect (sometimes it will be steady for 20-30 minutes, other times it drops every couple of minutes).

Sometimes it will refuse to reconnect until airport has been turned off and then back on.

The strange thing is, when booted into Windows 7, the connection NEVER drops.

It will run solidly for hour after hour with no problems what so ever; on the same WiFi networks that Snowleopard is constantly losing connecting to.

I have all the latest updates installed so not really sure what I can do; anyone have any ideas?

James.

A lot of people here want to blame it on the router. Well if that is the issue, then every single router, no matter where I am connected, from Barbados to Kathmandu, has router issues. This happens to me at home and a COUNTLESS number of wifi points across the globe. And nope, I don’t have this issue with my little HP netbook. This has happened almost since the day I got my MBP 11-10. After turning off my airport and turning it back on it would resolve the problem, and maybe it would happen only 2 or 3 times a day. But starting yesterday, it is doing it almost nonstop, to the point now that I am hardwired into my router. This isn't fun anymore.....

I didn't want to blame it on the router, I only nearly did before seeing here that it's apparently a general Apple problem and not one specific to my router.

Is your router an 802.11n-enabled one? Because if we can narrow down the issue to n-enabled routers, I'll simply buy a cheap a/b/g only type (54mps is far enough for my internet connection) to "solve" the problem for now. I can't wait for Apple to fix that - as you say it's no fun anymore. I need connectivity to work, and I don't have an MBP with magsafe power cord only to attach it to a ethernet tripwire!

I got my MBP 15" i7 a week ago and I been testing it non stop and it never
has dropped the link so far (knock on wood).
My router is a Belkin N1. I have had tons of problems like the ones
I read hee with d-link which is why I never will get one again.
Not saying it is pure router problem everyone has but just wanted to
share my experience.
Some of u maybe have had bad luck with your MacBooks. Hopefully AppleCare can have a closer look at it.

I had the same issue in which windows 7 wifi on the macbook pro was working fine but on OSX it was dropping out and i couldnt connect to the wifi network at my uni campus. I know its quite long but what i did to fix it is do a complete restore and then i manually copied the files i needed from the time machine backup, so it didnt copy the settings i had previously. Although i had to install the applications again the problem seems to be gone.

I recieved my first apple laptop literally 5 days ago... After about 2 days I am suffering from the same problems everyone has mentioned in this thread. At first I thought it was the internet at my place, then the router, finally I have come to the conclusion it's this overpriced peice of junk computer I purchased.

Honestly, this is ridiculous. How can they even release a peice of machinery that this happens on? After searching countless forums and support topics I still have no clear answer on how to fix it.

I bought a MAC because I kept hearing how great they were... easy to use. I was sick of Windows and want no part of Windows 7 on my machine in order to use the flipping internet.

Im going to contact Apple support and hopefully get some sort of resolution to this issue or else my machine is promptly going back to the manufacturer.

Update on this.

So this issue has been with me while using both a Belkin router a Linksys router.

So to see if I could solve it I borrowed a Cisco wap4410n small business wireless access point; which I connected into my current wired network.

So far I've been using it for about an hour and it's already dropped connection once.

So thats 3 WIFI routers/access points i've tried and it's done it on all 3.

Then most likely you have a bad apple 😟
Have you talked to AppleCare? what do they say?

And one more thing are you close to the router? Do you have other devices/stuff that might disturb the signal? One thing i know for sure disconnected me was a microwave when i lived in a little dorm 🙂 also my BT gadgets sometimes disturb my signal which they shouldn't. Maybe a long-shot but worth to check.

I also use Belkin N1 as i said and it works great. I have also 3 other windows7 laptop/desktops in the house at the same time so whatever it is it cant be affecting all units since mine works. If i were you i would go for a replacement or repair atleast.

I've been having this problem too since getting my MBP a couple weeks ago. Never had the issue with my PowerMac G5, or the old iBook or PC or my Droid. But the MBP will drop the connection a couple times over the course of the day and the only way to reconnect is to turn the Airport on, then off.

Tried changing the settings on the router (Cisco/Linksys WRG54G) and it still does it. So it sounds like a MBP issue since everyone is having it on the newer hardware.

Don't know if I'm too late, but just brought my MBP15 to work. The company installed a Belkin N Wireless Router this morning. I turned my MBP15 on, got a wireless connection for about 20-minutes then lost the connection. I shut the MBP off, restarted and the airport only picked up a distant Win7 laptop connected wirelessly to the Belkin, but not the Belkin itself.
Tried powering down the router and the modem for about one-half hour. after turning on the modem then about 15-minutes later the modem, but Airport unable to connect directly. Airport found the other laptop still connected to the internet that I was trying to get back on.
Tried to manually connect to the Belkin, even brought MBP to within 10 feet of the router, still nothing.
Any clues or fixes would be welcome.

Same here. At first, I though it was a router issue, too, but it is happening everywhere. So like redcookie said, unless every router that I come into contact with is screwed up, it's not a router issue. Even as I was trying to respond to this thread it acted up. Sad that Apple isn't responding to this, either.

I think its something to do with snow leopard too. Im obviously no expert however prior to installing snow leopard the problem if it did exist had not occured with any regularity. After snow leopard a dropped connection is an issue each time i am on my mbp 15 (2006).

I do not have this problem on my 3 week old mbp 13.

Why are Apple in denial about an issue reproduced by so many of its customers?

Just for info, i bought a new router today (NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N,WNDR3700) and i been using it with my new MBP i7 for about 4h and so far no problem (knock on wood).
I'm connected to the 5GHZ band and using WPA-PSK [TKIP] for encryption.

Will let you know if it starts failing but so far so good.
