my ipod can no longer sync to my PC?

since the 9.1 upgrade, I had the problem of ALL my songs being deleted from my iTunes, I got them back off of my back up hard drive, but now when I plug in my ipod classic, it tells me that my ipod is synced to another pc, now I have never plugged my ipod into another pc, so how could this be?

help, I would like to be able to add and remove songs from my ipod, but it seems all I can now do is charge it?

any suggestions, I have already uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and reset my ipod.

PC, Windows XP

*it tells me that my ipod is synced to another pc,*

I think it's probably saying that it's linked to another library which would be correct if somehow your original library has been deleted. You said that you were able to reconstruct your library from a backup, if that's the case and your iPod and the library have the same content (playlists, music, other media etc.) then it would make sense to choose to link with the new one. iTunes will erase the iPoid but then it will sync with the new library and re-add everything.

If you don't wish to sync but just want to continue to add to the iPod from the new library open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Prevent iPods and iPhones from syncing automatically" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.

When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. In manual mode you can drag and drop new content to the iPod from iTunes without erasing what's currently on it: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

itunes has completed a delete and re-sync and I now have a full ipod and itunes (all 5335 songs) but it will not let me edit the ipod list at all, all the songs are there, but there are shown in light grey and not able to be high lighted.
I'm also not able to play from my ipod list, only from my itunes??

I have seen a friend plug his ipod into some one elses computer and the same thing happened, it showed all the content but he was not able to access it, or modify it.

Before I backed up my itunes libary from my external hard drive, and itunes was empty, it would not allow itunes to be copyied from my ipod??

the message of this ipod is synced to another computer message came up.

so I'm stuck with an ipod I can not modify???

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos" as per the link above. The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes

Again that's most likely because the iPod was set to auto-sync with his home library. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer

For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod.

You're welcome. Not sure where the idea that it's new to 9.1 that you have to have an iPod set to manual if you want to access and change it directly as opposed to syncronising it with your iTunes library, that's always been the case. When your iPod is is set to sync with iTunes it automatically picks up any changes you made to to your iTunes library since you last connected. Anything you added to the library will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes library and the iPod are kept "in sync".

If you want to make changes directly to an iPod and therefore have it out of sync with iTunes you have always had to set an iPod to manual management .

+but it will not let me edit the ipod list at all, all the songs are there, but there are shown in light grey and not able to be high lighted.+
+the new FEATURE of 9.1 is that you can only modify yoyur libary when it is set to manual sync+

Zevoneer's right - syncing an ipod has never allowed ipod items to be edited. They have always been greyed out.
If they are not greyed out, then the ipod is set for "manually manage".

I'll be the first to admit that my knowlege of the works and settings is very minimal, to the point that I have NEVER touched the setting of my ipod.

so what i can't work out is why I was able to highlight individual songs and add songs to my ipod before when it was set to autimatic sync and since the update I can't???
or was it that I always had it set to manual and didn't know, and since the **** up of update 9.1 deleted my itunes libary, the setting got changed some how?

My best guess is, your ipod was set for manually manage for a long time and you forgot you did that. Apparently, the preferences got changed from manually manage to auto sync somehow in the latest update.

Did you ever do anything to remove the itunes preference files as a troubleshooting step? That would definitely change it back to auto sync. One example is, there are many posts around here about deleting the preference files to gain access to the itunes store.

An update is supposed to keep all your preferences intact, but it seems it didn't happen this time.
Easy enough to change it back!
