charged iPad would not wake up/turn on unless plugged in

My iPad was 85% charged but would not wake up/turn on after being put to sleep for about 12 hours. It only turned on when I plugged it into an outlet. Any ideas as to why?

ipad, iPhone OS 3.1.3

If it wouldn't wake up how do you know it had 85% of a charge??

It's possible that 85% was the last reading before it went to sleep and that later it was near dead and needed to be plugged in

I only know it was 85% charged because that was the battery reading indicated on the display as soon as I plugged it in and turned it on. In other words, it would not turn on despite being 85% charged.
