To use wifi, no plan is needed.

No setting change needed but you may be asked to log in to the system and if they use Java or Flash during the login, your Phone will not work.

3G would probably be available but you will be 'roaming' internationally and you will get scalped on data charges - just do not do it at all - you will pay a small fortune.

You have two choices:

1. Put the phone in airplane mode, then turn wifi back on in settings(it gets turned off by default in airplane mode). You won't be able to use any phone features.

2. Call AT&T & have international provisioning activated for your account & pick a plan. This will give you all of the phone features, but at a cost. This needs to be done BEFORE you leave:

More than likely internet access via wi-fi on the cruise ship will not be free. The cruise ship will have rates for wi-fi access that you can choose from.
