How do you rebuild all thumbnails?

I read in this forum that the latest update would reduce the size of the thumbnails directory and in some cases even quite a lot. My thumbnails directory is 9GB for 10,000 pictures so I figured I would give it a shot.

Only I can't figure out how to rebuild all thumbnails. I googled but didn't find anything related to thumbnails.

I did try however, to select all pictures and "update previews" - it took a few hours, but my "thumbnails" folder in the "Aperture Library" package remains the same.

In Aperture's Photos menu, look for menu item "Generate Thumbnails". I believe you need to select all the images for which you want thumbnails. Likely you could select project by project or at the library level.

Done. And weird enough, no change. Maybe I looked the wrong place? I open the "Aperture library"-package. And check the size of "Thumbnails" folder. It's the same now, as yesterday, after having rebuilt around 10,000 thumbnails over the past hours.

The weird thing though, Finder claims that "Thumbnails"-folder hasn't been changed since yesterday....

I tried regenerating thumbnails on my iMac this morning (Aperture 3.0.2) and the folder got about 9% larger. It's only a small folder though (only just over 1000 images) so I guess some of that may be due to overheads.

i saw the same thing...except one of my smaller libraries got 50% larger, went from 6 to 9.6gigs..

i dare not even try this on my larger librarie ~50gbs..the last thing i need is to turn that into a 75gb library.

i'm still looking for some explanation as to why the weird result when everyone else had the exact opposite occur

I imagine if you drill down into the Aperture Library until you get to the actual thumbnails, they'll have a new date although the folders at a higher level may not. If I am remembering correctly, I only saw a very small change in my Lirary size in the order of megabytes, not gigabytes so I concluded at the time that not everyone's thumbnails were incorrectly allocated. I think we're in the same boat where we didn't really have the problem with thumbnail allocations some others are seeing.

This is almost worth a sticky... I had the same experience: rebuilt thumbnails, and was surprised that the new size was exactly the same (and Aperture chewed for a long time, so something was going on, and drilling into the library showed that the thumbnails had indeed been "updated.")

Was only when I trashed the thumbnails and let it go to work the next time I opened the library that I noticed a decline -- in my case, almost exactly 50%.

Finally figured out that was the way to go on my own as well. My formerly 50GB library of ~71,000 images has now become a much leaner 28GB after trashing the thumbnail file and rebuilding from scratch (although it took about 28 hours for the full rebuild.

Well worth it however.

With a managed Library of just under 10,000 images (30% TIFF), 150 GB on disk, the Thumbnails file was just over 9GB. Doing a brute force delete of the Thumbnails folder and allowing Aperture 3.0 to rebuild produced a new Thumbnails file of just a tad over 5GB. (Rebuild took about four hours, if memory serves.)

Worth noting that the new thumbs files were fragemented into over 600 segments, but cleaned up in minutes with iDefrag.

Aperture 3.0 continues to be a speed demon and I got back just under 5 GB. Reasonable exercise, I suppose. 😉
