Canon 7D - Connecting to Mac / FCP7

Have 7D which I am trying to connect to mac directly through camera/USB (no CF reader as yet)
The camera does not show up on the desktop as previous cameras normally do - is this correct?
I have to use apple 'Image Capture' application to recognise the camera, or iPhoto. Have still not figured out a proper workflow with this though - do I just drag over my movie clips from image capture to a folder and then point FCP7 to that folder?

I've also downloaded the new plugin for FCP7. In the 'Log & Transfer' how do I get it to link to my clips?

Thanks

G5, Mac OS X (10.6.2), 2.26 Quad G5, 12Gb RAM, Final Cut Pro 6.0.5

Don't get a CF (capture flash) reader...your camera doesn't use that. It records to SD cards. Go buy one now...they are like $10. And yes, you can't get the card to mount on the desktop, you need the card reader. This way you retain the full card structure so that you can use LOG AND TRANSFER with the Canon plugin. If you use IMAGE CAPTURE to offload, you can't do this. The file structure will not be present.

You MUST have that card structure if you want to use Log and Transfer.

The best workflow Ive found is as follows
1. get a card reader and connect, it will see the card (camera being seen is iffy)
2. create folder on your backup media drive with Card 1 or todays date etc (this will be your "reel" no. so keep it unique)
3. copy ENTIRE content of card into that folder, not just the movie files.
4. open FCP and log & transfer (you've downloaded the eos plug in correct?),. under L&T preferences (top middle of L&T window) go to eos movie and select whichever variety of pro res you want.
add the volume (folder) you've created. log rushes and import.

the rushes will reside in your capture scratch folder as pro res, and the raw files will be in that folder, so depending on your system, they should be on seperate drives really.
hope that helps

the G5 I have is a fairly new Quad Core Intel Xeon. Surely it can import through Log and Transfer?

It's an "either-or" situation here. The G5 had a PowerPC chip in it. (Before Intel chips were in Macs.) A Quad Core Intel, by definition, cannot be a G5. Sounds like you might have a Mac Pro, not a G5?

If you do, in fact, have an Intel Mac and are running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 or Final Cut Pro 7.0.1 (and later), then you can download the aforementioned EOS Plug-in that open up your EOS footage in FCP's Log and Transfer. ( LINK) You need to select your OS.

Further, yes, the Lexar FW800 CF card reader is a great card reader.
