Apple AirPort Extreme Connection Issues

I've been having some really strange connection issues with my Airport Extreme and other Apple devices.

This tends to only happen in morning or late at night. The wireless connection will randomly drop out. My iPod Touch 3rd Gen will 'see' the network but report no Internet access. My Apple iMac 24" desktop that is hard wired into the AEX will report no Internet access. Trying wireless on the same desktop will not work either. It 'sees' the network but reports no IP address. My old Dell XPS 400 Windows 7 based desktop is hard wired into a DLink Gigabit switch which in turn is hard wired to the AEX. This desktop will receive the connection fine, no issues at all.

The only way the Apple devices will get the Internet connection again is if I use the AirPort Utility on my iMac and reset the router. Then everything works great all day until either later that night or the next morning. Not at the same time every day, but it seems to be mid to late morning when I start using the equipment and experience the issue. The old Dell PC is used as early as 7am everyday with no issues at all.

I can't tell if this is a problem with the firmware update I did recently or some sort of electrical noise. 6 months ago the router was connected to the surge protection outlets on an APC Back-UPS RS 800 (800VA). The battery failed in it and I haven't replaced it since. My iMac is connected to the exact same model in the next room, which is newer and still working fine. The issues with the router (assuming it's the router here) have only started happening since the last AirPort firmware update. There's nothing running in my house abnormally or during these connection drops, but this is an old house with older electrical circuits. Outlets are not normally 3 prong grounded, but in these two locations (by the router and in the next room at the iMac) are. I had them replaced a year ago for the 3-prong grounded outlets. There is a whole house surge connector in the basement to prevent large electrical spikes. I'm in southeaster Wisconsin so about the same time this has been occurring, it's been the rainy season with many big storms.

Something in my mind keeps making me thing this is electrical noise, and I should put another APC in place so that there is line conditioning in the place the router & cable modem are connected. My mother uses the old Dell for light gaming and Internet use. It's not really worth it to me to buy a huge battery backup system to keep it running, as the system probably has a $150 value or less. I'm contemplating a full APC backup replacement, or a simple low VA APC system to use just for line conditioning and such to help stabilize the AEX Router, cable model, etc. We get about 1 or less blackouts per year. Brownouts are 2-3 a year. This is why my iMac will always be on a UPS.

For reference, my wired network is Cat6 with gigabit equipment. The AEX is based on 802.11n draft, dated 2007 MB053LL/A Model A1143 on the box.

My system looks like this: <<Internet>>---Cable Modem---AEX---1.)Apple iMac, 2.)Vonage Phone Box, 3.) Dlink Gigabit 10 Port Switch. The Dell desktop, nearby Sony Blu-Ray player, Xbox 360, and 2 other wired ethernet connections are all in the switch.

Anyone have anything I can try here? I'm open to any suggestions as this is a bit frustrating & annoying.

I think it might help others help you if we know which firmware version you are referring to or are using.

7.4.2

7.4.2 was released almost a year ago.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL849

Is this the one you are updating to and having problems?
If so, then can we assume that you downgraded to 7.4.1

I would like to ask which version of Airport Utility are you running?
The newest one just released.... 5.5.1
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL955

Please let us know. Someone might be able to help.

Hmm interesting. Every time I'm asked to upgrade the firmware, I do it. I was only notified of 7.4.2 this last time that AirPort Utility updated which was March 31st. So far I'm having no problems since I downgraded to 7.4.1. I'm only using the AirPort Utility on my iMac which runs Snow Leopard, is on all the time, and automatically looks for updates.

I have been thinking of upgrading to the newest AirPort Extreme with Dual Band Wireless but have been waiting to see if theres a new refresh coming. No I don't particularly need it, but it has been about 3 years. I run my own IT Consulting business from my home and I like to keep my tech fairly updated just to make sure everything continues to run smoothly.

I've been having connection issues since the OSX 10.6.3 and AU 5.5.1 updates, which have been the only changes I've made to my network for over 6 months.

*The firmware update appears to have 'sleep' mode issues.*

When I open my MBP after it has been closed for a period of time (1 hour or longer), upon opening it up the wireless signal is available for about 5 seconds, then it is no longer available. The only way to get a continuous signal is to restart the MBP. I've had to do this 3 times today.

I hope Apple doesn't take several months to consider they screwed up. Having to reboot my MBP every time I want to use it is a pain in the arse!

Well, after putting up with this stuff, I finally decided to redo the network. I had a dual-band 802.11n (5 GHz) and a B/G running on 2 AirPort Extremes. One was a Gigabit and the other was a Fast Ethernet model. It was a secured network.

We recently moved and was only running on a Fast Ethernet running 802.11n in b/g compatible mode. This was an open network. So, with all of the problems, I decided to rebuild my dual-band.

I setup the Gigabit (7.4.2) to running in 802.11n at 5 GHz and made it secure. I then reset the Fast Ethernet (7.4.2) and set it up in Bridge mode up, running 802.11n in b/g compatible mode and secure.

So far, everything is running fine.

Just a reminder, don't forget to reset your cable modem after resetting your base stations, as it can lead to some frustrations if you don't...

for the last two days my network has went out at exactly or around 3 am, i have
owned the new 7.5.1 airport extreme for two days.

this morning i powered down the dsl modem and the airport for ten minutes and
plugged it in.

i hope this fixes it.

when this airport goes out, the computers report connected to the airport, but no internet connection, no gateway, airport doesn't give an ip address, and
airport utility can't find the airport

I had the problem again today where all my devices are connected but there is no IP address. This time I called Apple and I have an open case # with them. We did a factory reset and now I'm waiting to see if this has fixed it or if it happens again. I found that this is covered under the Apple Care warranty that I have on my iMac so that helps. Even before they asked for my AppleCare information they spent 30min on the phone with me to see if they could figure out the issue so if any of you are hesitant about calling, do it anyway. I got a real person in the US, so I didn't have to try hard to understand a foreign accent or anything.

So you know, the factory reset was done like this: I pulled out the power cable, re-inserted it but then right away they had me poke a paperclip into that tiny reset hole on the back of the router. The yellow light blinked fast and I let go of the reset button. It then wiped the settings and reset the router like it was the day I bought it. I re-entered all my information and saved it. So far its working but we'll see if it drops out again.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen or not, but I really wish that green light on the router would turn yellow when the router looses it's IP address. It's kind of a fooler to have no Internet connection but the router's light would still be green.

yeah i unplugged my dsl modem (its 2 wire in bridge mode for a static ip address)
for ten minutes and just like clockwork my new airport extreme mc304ll firmware version 7.5.1 locked up at or around 3am just like its been doing for 3 days straight. i called the broadband support people at at&t and they ran through thier end and they see nothing unusual at 3am.

its weird. i can't explain it. i was able to ping my ip address, but i was not
able to connect to it (rdp) and when i came home it was the same story, all computers report no network connection (non routeable ip addresses wired and wireless) and no gateway. its looking like the newer airport extreme has been locking up on me every day for 3 days straight. however the light was green!!!

someone posted a link on how to contact apple about this problem, or to report problems, does anyone have any contact for apple?

apple is clueless they tell me i can return the router at the apple store and they are unaware of any problems with the airport extreme

another odd thing about the airport i noticed (a bug maybe)
maybe its a minor bug but its set to renew the aes-ccmp key every hour
you will see this in the log as "rotated ccmp group key"

this newer airport seems to renew it like
1 hour rotated key
10 minutes later rotated key
1 hour later rotated key
10 minutes later rotated key

when i reboot the router i loose my logs and statistics , it starts over
so i have no idea what if any useful information is in the airport log
that could pertain to my situation.

p.s. i know the time is about or around 3 am on the dot that the airport cuts out
because i am running boinc and i am going by boinc's communication log.

Well I can add my experience to this problem as well. Brand new Dual Band II router with the latest firmware, 7.5.1. It seems like every couple of days, the router will lose its connection to the internet. The wireless network will still work, but neither my wirelessly connected laptop nor my hardwired Mac Pro can connect to the internet. I can't even connect to the router using Airport Utility until I unplug the router and plug it back in. Very frustrating, as my previous Dual Band I router was rock solid. I guess I'll call Apple and see what they tell me, though I'm sure it will be the hard reset route.

I can report much the same with a slight variation. My various computers seem to take turns on going out. 1 morning my iPad reported a strong connection but was unable to connect to the internet. Next morning my wired Windows PC goes out. I think it is a DHCP issue because the connections appears to be there but the settings get wiped out. Very strange indeed. And it all started happening after the last firmware update.
