Transfer Excel on Mac files to Numbers on iPad

Yep, it works just fine. There's a section in iTunes under the Apps tab when you select the iPad for "File Sharing". Add the file you want to transfer, sync it to your iPad, and you can then open it in Numbers. You can also email the spreadsheet and pick it up out of Mail on the iPad.

Where in iTunes is this tab. Is in the Library or in the Store.

Neither. As I said, select the iPad in iTunes and you'll see the Apps tab.

I hate to test your patience but the only App tab I see is in the Library. I went to ITunes preferences for File Sharing and found nothing in regard to iPADs. Try one more time please.

Connect your iPad to iTunes
Click on your device in the left column
There are now tabs across to top for all the areas of your iPad
Click on apps tab, which is the area where you control which apps, screen layouts etc
Scroll down to the bottom of that page

There is also a third way to get an Excel file onto your iPad. In addition to grabbing from e-mail and uploading through iTunes sync, you can open files stored on a website and click on the "open in Numbers" button at top right.

Only problem is if it isn't done just right you never get the open in numbers option. It just opens in the browser.

I'm not sure what you're referring to about "doing it just right" - I've had no trouble downloading files from the web. The bar containing the button to download appears for several seconds after the file loads, and then does go away, but it is easily made to reappear by changing to another Safari window and then returning to the window with the file of interest (at which point the bar reappears for the first several seconds, re-enabling download). This behavior is consistent and repeatable on my iPad.

If they have a download file link, it might not load properly depending on the method their server uses to serve the download. (even on my Mac I get these asp files downloaded from some blogs that have download links).

I do see the tabs across the top for some files that load in safari, but not an open in numbers button. So apparently there is more than one way of srving the files.

Direct links to www.mywebiste.com/somexcel.xls might work, but I don't see this near as often as web served pages that I was having problems with.

Then you can download it onto your iPad from iWork.
