Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I have the same issue but mine also includes the period shortcut.
If I am hooked up to my keyboard the auto stuff doesn't work even if I manually tap the screen to type.
The fact that this does not work is the issue - not laziness in relying on shortcuts. This needs to be fixed.
When using the onscreen keyboard, you are using a keyboard in a true mobile-OS type of way. When using a wireless keyboard, you are using a keyboard in a non mobile-OS kind of way. Can't have both...

I understand about the period shortcut but auto cap after a period IS standard in non-mobile OS. Pages, Word etc all do it as a standard feature setting. Why should this be an exception?

From what I gather doing a Google search auto-capitalization seems only to work with the built-in keyboard but I guess they figure that you can more easily click Shift when you need to on a physical one.
Pity, I would have thought it would have been relatively easy to program such a feature into autospell. Maybe in a future iOS update it might happen.
