I bought this car charger and it worked for months, and when I got back from a road trip I got the latest iPhone OS update and now the phone tells me that "Charging is not supported with this accessory."
Does your iPhone charge without any problems when connected to your computer or to the wall charger?
Check the dock connector port closely on your iPhone for any dirt, lint, or foreign material - and it doesn't take much.
If the dock connector port on your iPhone is clear and your iPhone charges without any problems with connected to your computer and/or to the wall charger, there is something wrong with your car charger.

I have a radio that has the iphone charge connector on it, I have been using it for 5 months with no problem. It would play music from the iphone and charge the iphone. I would allows get the message "iPhone is not compatible with this accessory, would you like to turn on Airplane Mode" but it would charge and work fine. Now I get a new message and it will not charge. I did a complete restore of the phone too. Still getting this message. “This accessory is not made to work with iPhone. Charging is not supported with this accessory.” I tried cleaning the connector too.
It has never had any problems syncing or charging and the car charger has not been damaged in any way. The car charger suddenly became totally useless after that update.
The phone currently has no problems when connected to a computer or to a wall charger. The only problem is with the car charger which does, however, work with other devices such as my iPod classic.
Did the charger include the "made for iPhone" certification when purchased including for the 3GS?
Your iPod Classic can be charged via USB or Firewire. The original iPhone can be charged via USB or Firewire, but the FireWire pins were removed from the iPhone's dock connector after the original iPhone which is also the same with all iPod models now. If your car charger charges via FireWire, this wouldn't work with the 3GS regardless. If a 3rd party device does not include the "made for iPhone" certification, this doesn't mean it won't work with the iPhone but having the certification ensures it - unless the device has failed.
If there were something wrong with your iPhone, it wouldn't be charging when connected to your computer or to the wall charger either.
If the charger includes the "made for iPhone" certification, contact the manufacturer. If not, purchase one that does.
Yes, I remember specifically looking for one that was made for iPhone 3GS. Looks like its time to go find another. Any recommendations for a new one that will work for more than a couple months?
I have a clock radio that was working with my iphone 3GS until very recently. It still will charge it from time to time, but most of the time it now says "this device doesn't support iphone charging", which it never had a problem with before. I went to the Apple Store and they said to try and restore the iphone. I did that and it worked right after that. But the next day I still got that same error message again. I read where some applications can cause that problem. Even if you have had the app for a while. The update could cause it. I posted this message the other day. But it doesn't look like it ever got put on here. I will try again.
Well I went to the Apple Genius Bar and sounds like Apples last update to the iPhone OS made my clock radio now incompatible for charging. It will still work with the iPhone 3G but not my 3GS. The Genius tech said Apple did that to protect the phone so they say. I can still use the iphone on the radio to listen to music and all but now it will not charge on it anymore. I hate to have to run out and buy a new clock radio to have both features.
I have a 'hands free' device in my car that worked flawlessly before I upgraded and the speaker and mic no longer work since the upgrade. Charger works, but that's it.
Same problem with my 3Gs after the upgrade very disappointed using a Griffin made for iPhone cigarette to usb adaptor and an apple made cable for connecting charger and audio to the car stereo this system worked fine in the past and charged my phone quite well. The iOS4 must have changed the power management unit settings because now it will not charge at all.
Does anyone know how many milliamps are needed for it to work now?
What brand 12v adaptor will charge your phone?
I have a sony clock radio and I have 3 iphones in my house. Mine is a 3G and works just fine on the radio..charging and all, now my daughters worked till about 3 days ago now will not charge. Then my wifes 3GS all of a sudden stopped charging, it says something like "device not support, will not charge" then something about airplane mode....weird thing is that my iphone 3G still charges but there's don't. I have not updated any of the phones to the 4.0 yet. Any ideas?
