iPod Classic Won't Respond

My iPod Classic won't respond to any controls. The screen is illuminated and shows the time (although the time is wrong) and below that a triangle pointing to a battery symbol. The triangle and the battery symbol are black. The Hold switch is off. If I connect the iPod to my computer, the iPod does not show up in iTunes. I followed the reset instructions in the manual, but that didn't do anyhting. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
