missing airport icon

missing airport icon

hi,
i just downloaded the newest itunes 6.0.1 and as a result i have lost my airport icon and connection to the internet.
it's a g4 imac. any ideas how to get it back or uninstall itunes 6.0.1.

Lost your Airport icon - you mean the fan-shaped icon for the Airport menu has disappeared from its usual location near the right side of the MacOS menu bar?

If so, see whether this addresses the problem: To display AirPort status in the menu bar

it tells me the hardware is not there.
everything was working just fine until the new doanload. i checked the airport card, all is well and connected there.

This is a far more serious problem.

Run the System Profiler utility - look to see if it identifies the presence of an Airport interface on this Mac.

nope, i ran the airport setup assisstant and it can't find the hardware either

This is a very odd problem (Airport interface dying after an iTunes software update) I have never seen described before. It is possible the iTunes software update, and the loss of your iMac's Airport interface, were purely coincidental. Unless someone else here has any suggestions, and especially if your iMac G5 is still covered by your AppleCare warranty, I would give AppleCare tech support a call.

Which iMac G5 version is this - the original, the "ambient light sensor" model, or the current model?

it's an imac g4, am on a different g5 to write this, the g4 no longer has internet. i called apple and after asking to speak to a supervisor the guy put me on hold then hung up on me.

In that case, pulling out and reseating the Airport card might be worth trying.

unfortunately i tried that when it first said there was no airport hardware detected. (also tried hitting it)

I have the same problem although the cause is different. My powerbook g4 airport card vanished after I had a kernel attack. I didn't get the details but restarted. When the system came back up the airport was still not found (checked in system profiler etc..) I am reluctant to reset the card as I've had colleagues complain of problems after resetting or even installing a card. At present i am connected to the net via ethernet cable.
