iPAD and Updating the OS

I am very new to using apple products.

Well, I just heard about the new OS4 for the iPhone and that same OS coming for the iPad in the fall. So as new as I am to how Apple Products work I have to wonder… Can you update the OS on the iPhone or the iPad?

I have the 3G iPad on order right now and it would be a bummer to get a new product only to have it instantly become outdated in a matter of months.
The new OS brings a lot to the table and if I have to wait for that OS to come out to get the iPad will.

Thank you,

iPAD, iPhone OS 3.1.3

Yes you will be able to update the OS on you iPad and iPhone when they are released to the public. The update is done via iTunes when you synch your device.

Upgrades to the iPad will be operating system only - and even if Apple were to release OS components to handle new hardware such as a camera, the first edition of the iPad doesn't have such features.

What we'll get are the improvements detailed in the recent public announcement of OS4, along with all the other OS enhancements, but not the ability to video chat, upgrade the memory or similar hardware-based modifications.
