timecapsule connectin problems

I have a timecapsule but struggling to get it set-up. Originally had it set-up wireless, via my netgear dg834gt router (which is located downstairs) however found the backups kept falling over, the internet worked fine.
I have since decided to move the timecapsule upstairs to use solely as a backup drive for timemachine and connect via ethernet to the imac.
This worked once, but has since struggled to connect. I have to restart the capsule to see the disk, but preference hangs when trying to set-up with wireless off, do I have to change the ip settings?
