Won't sync videos in iPhoto

Hi, I have my iPad set up to sync with iPhoto. There is an option to check in the Photos tab that says "include videos." However, no videos I have in iPhoto are syncing over to my iPad. I would like to watch the videos from my camera which is stored in iPhoto along with my photos on my iPad.

Does anyone know how this works? Thanks in advance. I tried browsing for this topic but didn't find any relevant posts.

Are the videos you have in iPhoto compatible with the iPad?

Here are the standard video requirement for the iPad:

H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

If you movies are not within the above limits then they will not sync via iTunes.

You don't sync content to your iPad using iPhoto, you do it using iTunes.
Have you checked the settings within the Photos sync panel in iTunes with the iPad connected?

Ian, thanks for the reply. I am using iTunes and the settings I referred to were in the Photos tab in iTunes - sorry I wasn't clear about that. It's probably an issue with my video formatting then. I will need to check that when I get home. Is there an easy way in iPhoto to check the specs of a particular video file (e.g. codec, framerate, resolution, etc.)?

Any news on this? I have the same issue. My videos was taken with a Canon Ixus and are M-JPEG in .avi file format. They are playing well in iPhoto. When trying to sync with the iPad none of the videos appears on the iPad (by the way: I can not import the .avi's in the iTunes Library as iTunes did not support AVI).

Would be very interesting if anyone successfully was syncing M-JPEG videos from iPhoto via iTunes to the iPad.

I personally suppose that this is not possible (at least in the moment) and that the M-JPEG support of the iPad is only to IMPORT and watch videos via the Camera Connection Kit to the iPad. It is interesting that you even can import unsupported formats via the connection kit:
"Note: iPad Camera Connection Kit imports most media files on the camera or SD card, regardless of whether that format is compatible with iPad. If you are unable to view certain images or videos, verify that they are in an iPad compatible format, or import them to your computer for viewing." I have the same problem too with my Panasonic DMC-ZS3. I checked the file format on the camera and of the resulting video files. The camera is set to Motion JPEG. The files in Quicktime Player X report as Photo - JPEG (Apple Photo - JPEG in QT 7 Pro), 1280x720, Millions Linear PCM, 16 bit big-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 16000Hz with an FPS of 30 and a Data Rate of 28.20 Mbit/s.

So I believe that they should be able to play, right?

I was working with Apple Tech Support on it. They had me go into my iPhoto Library and delete the iPod Photo Cache. I did that and the next time I synched my iPad, iTunes took a long time to re-create the cache. After that sync the videos showed up and played no problem... for a day or so but then randomly they disappeared again. I haven't tried to delete the cache again but every time I sync my iPad, iTunes reports that it is converting a bunch of photos and the number corresponds exactly to the number of videos I am having problems with. Each time I sync it says that it is converting and each time none of the videos show up.

I think this is a bug. However, I don't know if Apple has recognized it or when they will fix it.

Anyone from Apple care to comment? While it is frustrating, I can understand such a bug cropping up with a new product like the iPad. However I would like to get some confirmation that it is recognized and is in the queue to be fixed?

Thanks,
Aslam

Just to say I am experiencing the same issue. No videos will sync from iPhoto or Aperture to iPad, even in iPad friendly formats. The same files sync when done directly from the iTunes library. The reason I want to sync through iPhoto or Aperture is so that I can import movies into Keynote on the iPad.

Anyone have any ideas or is it just buginess?

I'll add the following information to the thread...

Yes, the videos in question do play on the iPad because I watched them on the IPad after I imported them from the camera using the iPad camera connection kit. However, they no longer appear in the Photos app after I imported the photos into iPhoto. The videos are present in the iPhoto library but not on the iPad. iTunes has been configured to sync all photos including videos. I have iPhoto '08. Same results have occurred for both iOS 3.2 and iOS 4.2.

The files from my camera are 640 × 480, Motion JPEG, Linear PCM, 14430 bps AVI. If I open the file with Quicktime Player and save it as a 480p MPEG file and import back into iPhoto, iTunes will then copy the files to the iPad.

Similar problem here:

Panasonic FT1 - video recorded in HD M-Jpeg. Copied to iPad using camera connection kit along with some photos.

Photos and video can be viewed on the ipad, no problem.

Copied to the Mac using Image Capture.

I tweaked a few of the images, didn't touch the video. Synced it all back and the movies fail to sync due to them not being compatible with the iPad!

Copied the file to my iPad using File Sharing on the apps tab in iTunes. Copied to Air Sharing to see if that worked...... it's fine, plays perfectly.

Matched the file on the iPad with the version on my Mac and they are identical. I'm certain it's not a file issue but a failure in the itunes code to recognise files that can be played.

Very frustrating.

I selected the movie in iPhoto, then File/Reveal in Finder. Open the revealed file in QuickTime Player (double click should do it). In QuickTime Player, select the menu: Share/iTunes. In iTunes, with iPad connected, open your device and choose Movies. Find the newly imported file and check. Apply or Sync. The movie will be in the Video.app on iPad, under the Movie tab.

My file was a small size avi taken on a canon still camera, and the only option for export available was iPod and iPhone, but it still worked on the iPad 2.

I have dozens, if not at least a hundred videos of birthdays, christmases, thanksgivings, a graduation, and many other family events that I, 1) would very much prefer to have organized alongside their respective photos, and 2) simply do not have the time or the patience to manually "convert" several days worth of what are already confirmed to be compatible files!
