It simply does not appear to work. Even when I go from a room with good sunlight to a completely dark closet/room/restroom/etc. I do not see the screen dim or become brighter.
Well, that was interesting. I did what enderx said -- having thought my brightness sensor was broken too. And alas, it does brighten a bit when I slide to unlock and then remove my thumb from the sensor.
So either we can say the sensor is not a great one, or just calibrated to be much my subtle than we wanted (I often self-dim the brightness levels when I'm in a dark room.
Ultimately, it should be possible to resolve this via software. I see it as a design flaw. All of the MacBook Pros I have ever owned would changed brightness in real-time to adapt to ambient lightning conditions...
My guess is even if auto brightness and the slider are at the lowest value the iPad would still feel too bright In an all dark room. I have to keep a light on otherwise the screen doesn't get dark enough except in iBooks.
To see the auto-brightness feature at it's best you need to do the following.
1. Set the brightness slider to the middle position.
2. Go into a dark room.
3. Toggle the On/Off button back and forth. You should notice the effect now.
Hope this helps those who were thinking that their ambient light sensor is defective and were planning on returning their I-Pad.
The tips from above of me did not work for me.
My eyes still can not accept the bright from my ipad.
This is one of my reason why I did not allow my kids play iPad in the dark.
I tried also, i worked when cover the censor with tumb and unlock the ipad. it changed into brighter, but when i place my tumb back to the censor, it has no reaction, should be dimmer logically
1) put manual brightness control approximately in the middle
2) set auto brightness to auto (on)
3) turn ipad completely off
4) turn on go to to autobrightness in settings. Turning on and off has NO EFFECT
5) put ipad to standby (NOT COMPLETLEY OFF) by pressing the side button once
6) wake the ipad by pressing the side button once
7) go to settings/brightness and push the auto brightness switch on and off. You should be able to see the effect: not impressive but convenient!
That works! But, once I go back in to a well lit room I don't notice any difference. When I have the iPad on in the dark or poorly lit room, I don't notice any difference.
In a room no, but if you go outside, most probably you will. As I said, it is convenient (especially if you want to read a book at night -then you also have additional dimmer in the ibook or kindle software), but certainly not impressive!
I got an iPad for Christmas and also have noticed that auto brightness doesn't work right. I have it set in the middle and the sensor is not blocked. It doesn't seem to change the screen brightness no matter what the ambient lighting is.
