new ipod, copying music

You'll need to make an initial sync, just as you did with your old one (I hope).
iTunes will ask you to pick a name (for the iPod) and let you set the iPods update behaviour.
If you choose the auto- update, all the music in your library will automatically be copied to the iPod.
If you prefer manual update, you'll have to drag/drop the entire library onto the iPod icon in the source list.

It happens automatically the very first time you plug your iPod.

Is the iPod showing in iTunes?
If it does, everthing should be fine, you can click the eject button.
If not you'll have to format it with the Updater first.

I suppose you would have noticed, if it did.
An icon appears in the list to the left, also, the iPod usually "steals" the focus, meaning: the main view switches to the iPods contents.

As yours didn't show up, you should try the Updater.
