Hi; I have a Canon T2i also; I've used both a card reader and a direct connection (USB 2.0) cable to the camera. Both work, though in my case using the direct connection to the camera is many times faster than from the card reader. I'm using SanDisk Ultra 15MB/s SDHC cards. In the event you didn't think of it, have your camera powered on, and the top dial set to the "Movie" mode. Also, in your owner's manual, Canon specifies a Class 6 card, which is faster than many people traditionally use. I'd also warn against using a cheaper card; I've read on several A/V forums that people transmitting files using cheaper cards have often corrupted the data during the upload from camera to computer.
I've only had the camera for a week, but I've shot and sent to iPhoto both 1080p and 720p movies. Notice I said
iPhoto, not iMovie. Once they are in iPhoto, you can use them by accessing them from the Event Library's "iPhoto Videos" entry in iMovie.
