iTunes keeps re-optimizing photos for iPhone and iPad

Hi all,

I'm not sure when this started, but for a while now, every time I make any sort of change on my iPad or iPhone (adding a podcast, changing a contact, etc.) iTunes decides to re-optimize 78 photos (I don't know why 78, I have hundreds of photos saved), delete them, and then sync them again. This only seems to happen when I change any kind of content to sync to the iPad or iPhone, though I'm not sure if that's really the case and it may be more random than that. It does happen a lot and it is such a waste of time.

I tried deleting the iPod Photo Cache from iPhoto (using Clean My Mac) and it didn't help... In fact I'm wondering if using Clean My Mac is what started this. However I'm also not sure if this started when I got my 3GS and started adding videos on iPhoto, which I do sync to my devices. But the number is always 78 and I have less videos than that, so this doesn't make sense.

Please help if you have any ideas at all... It's a big nuisance and I don't understand why it's happening. Thanks.

Same problem.

Iphone 3GS on iOS4. Optimizing photos upon sync. Took longish to optimize 7000 ish photos.

Now, all of them are completely BAD, low resolution on the Iphone. this is a bug, has to be because who wants to see low low res photos?

I plug in for a Sync, now there are 406 photos left to optimize. Uhh, why?

Better question, why not ASK ME to optimize or down res my files to begin with.

This is a bug, please please please fix.

Just bought myself an iPad now. I have an Apple TV, an iPod Touch, an iPhone and an iPad (plus, of course the computer to sync them on).

The iPad also does a re-optimization.

I'm really think it has to do with multiple peripherals that require different resolution.

BUT (and I think this is the issue) iTunes doesn't have multiple cache folders sets - one set for each device. It creates one set only. So each time it syncs with the same device it's fine until it syncs with a different device that demands a different resolution. After all the iPad wants MUCH bigger photos than an iPod touch, no?

In which case, when a different resolution device is plugged in it re-optimizes the photos for that new device. Plug the alternate device with a non-compatible resolution back in and it feels the need to purge all that and start again!

That's my theory, anyway. And it makes sense given my Apple TV is always syncing and I think keeps knocking my cache out in favour of itself. Thus, when I occasionally sync my iPhone it's optimize time.

For now I simply turn off sync photos on my portable devices unless I change the contents of my picture folder. (Remembering to tell iTunes to LEAVE the photos on the device, of course). Not a perfect workaround but at least it skips the step for daily backups.

If I'm right I think Apple is reluctant to have multiple cache folder sets for each peripheral because of bloated drive space requirements (which is a bit silly in 2010 - the cache folder is pretty samll) or perhaps to a programmer it appears inelegant.

Either way the result is highly annoying --I think we can all agree.

First open iTunes and connect all devices with iPhoto photos on and remove them via itunes. Close itunes.
Check and download latest version of iPhoto
Then rebuild iPhoto as follows:
1.Quit iPhoto if it is open.
2.Hold down the Command and Option keys on the keyboard.
3.Open iPhoto.

Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the library.
A dialog will appear with rebuild options. Select all the options.
Click Rebuild to begin the rebuild process. This may take a few minutes to complete. Close iPhoto

Reopen iTune and connect first device and pick options for loading photos.
This will reoptimise photos creating another cache and then you can reload onto all devices.
