Apple USB modem?

My mom's old iMac has a dead modem and ethernet connection, and we're currently using a USB modem with mixed results in OS 9. Planning to upgrade to OS X - does the new Apple USB Modem work with CRT iMac's?

PB 17, 1.67 Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.3), imac, older PB, clamshell ibook

Here's my problem. I have an eMac that didn't come with an internal modem. Will this thing (Apple USB Modem) work with it? I know it says "Macintosh computer without built-in modem" but I'm still a little wary.

I have 10.4.3 installed.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've got a dead modem in my eMac 700 Mhz. I rely on dial-up because we're located where there is no cable or DSL and we really only use e-mail and light web browsing.

I ordered the Apple USB modem, hoping that it would be an easy solution. I've followed the installation instructions (to the best of my ability) and I can hear the modem dial, but it eventually "hangs" and does nothing.

I'm wondering if the modem is bad, out of the box, or maybe the External Apple Modem script (v92) that I chose as a driver is out of date? Maybe there is some additional set up for using this on an older machine that has/had a modem?

Any advice would be appreciated...thanks!

I think you need to have at least OSX 10.4.3 installed on your computer. I have it, and I hooked up the USB modem, restarted my computer, and it showed up in my Network Preferences. I didn't need to select a script or anything. It works great!

Anyway, I think it is designed to work only with 10.4.3 and a computer with at least a G4 Processor.

Hope this helps.

I can't comment on the Apple USB modem at all other than "it should work", but I do have a alternate modem solution for a "modem-less" eMac (I have one of those too). I use a Keyspan twinSerial USB adapter (eBay for 20-25 bucks on a good day) and plug in my old reliable GlobalVillage serial modem (10 bucks on eBay, if you don't have one laying around - seems like everyone does...). Works like a charm and provides an additional "Serial port" that I use for my old Stylewriter II. Price seems competitive with the 50 bucks at the Apple Store for the USB modem.
