Drive PHYSICALLY damaging DVDs

Is it possible to get a new Mac OS X install DVD after that my Powerbook G4's DVD drive physically damaged it during an attempt to reinstall Mac OS X?

The disk was undamaged when I put it in, came out scratched after the first installation try, and had more scratches after a second try (by then the drive wouldn't work properly anyway).

The drive has enormous trouble reading the disk, makes a lot of noise, doesn't spin up the disk properly, and it looks like the system forgot it actually has a DVD drive...

The Powerbook's out of commission with possible logic board failure and a hopelessly confused power management - I got it less than 2 months ago... 😟

I had the same problem with my new PowerBook (the latest model from October 2005). The DVD drive was defective, and I ended up getting my entire PowerBook replaced.

Your drive definitely shouldn't be having problems reading discs, scratching discs, or making tons of noise (in my case it was a loud scraping noise -- I'm not talking about the loud spin-up noise, which is normal). Call Apple immediately (or if you bought it at a local store, take it back to the store). Either the drive will be replaced, or your entire PowerBook will be replaced.
