Canon Pixma MP470 all in one scanner printer "scan fail"

I found earlier posts that described similar problems as mine, they were marked as answered. I continue to have problems even tho I have followed earlier instructions from other members i.e. PAHU.

I am trying to use a Canon MP470 printer connected by USB cable to my iMac. I don't use it much and it has worked unreliably in the past. Today all scans fail except one which to me would mean that I have installed the correct driver for OSX 10.6. I am not sure if I have deleted the old preset and created a new preset for the new driver correctly. I hate to say it but I am a little unsure how to go about this. I don't remember having as much trouble before I upgraded to OS 10.6.3.

If anyone has some suggestions or instructions, I sure would appreciate them.

Hi there,

Looking at the Canon USA web site, there is a version 13.9.1 scanner driver that you should be using on Mac OS X 10.6. If your upgrade to 10.6 is still using an older driver for the previous OS, then download and install this latest driver.

If you already have this driver and it is still not working correctly, then can you confirm what you mean by Presets, as I am not aware of being able to make a Preset in Image Capture or Preview for the USB connected scanner.

I am not sure how to check which version of scanner driver I am using. Being novice I have downloaded and installed a couple of versions. Thanks for the link to the canon website. If I read this webpage correctly it says that there are no software updates for this product.

The installation instructions generally walk me through the process which I have done. I have not deleted any old files associated with the MP Navigator and I don't know if reinstalling software just over writes.

The concept of presets I picked up from your earlier posts. I assumed that they were some sort of preferences.

I just discovered image capture for the first time and was able to use to scan to desktop bypassing the need to use the all in one printer to scan and save but I would ultimately like to restore my printers capability to scan as it used to. It does print for me.

I really appreciate your time and pointers!

Pahu, this is your earlier post...

The printer driver you would have been using for Tiger is different to the driver that you would now be using for Snow Leopard. Therefore, any preset you created for the old driver will not function with the new driver, as the menu for setting black and white printing is different.

So, *I suggest you delete the old preset and create a new b&w preset.* For the MP470, the Grayscale Printing option is located under the Quality & Media menu. Select this and create your new B&W preset.

Okay, the Presets in this post did refer to the Printer preset. The poster had a black and white preset they had created with a previous OS and was trying to use it on Snow Leopard, which did not work because the printer driver was different on the new OS. This does not apply to the scanner portion of your MP470.

As for checking the scanner driver version, this is not an easy task. But the new driver installation typically overwrites the previous version. If you are not sure which driver install you did last, I suggest you run this v13.9 installer again. to ensure it is what you are using.

I would also suggest you have MP Navigator v2.04 or later installed, as earlier versions may not be that compatible with Snow Leopard. Again, running the newest version of MP Navigator installer should overwrite an older version.

If you have the latest MP Navigator and it is still not scanning correctly then please reply. At least you now know about Image Capture so if you did find that MP Nav stopped working, you are not totally stumped 🙂

Canon Australia has the v2.04 MP Navigator.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200041018.html

However, the MP470 does not appear to be a model offered in this country, but the MP460 and MP480 are/were and this is the version of MP Nav they used.

Checking the Canon USA web site, I can see they are providing MP Navigator v1.05, so this must be the version required for this model.

The driver link I provided previously only took you to the MP470 downloads page. You then need to select the OS you have to see the drivers. The scanner driver is named "mp470sosxsd1391ej7.dmg"
