Using a Sega Megadrive/Genesis controller on my imac

Hello,
im not sure if if im in the right area so apologies if not. i should really have the hang of it by now!

okay so im looking to connect my sega megadrive/genesis controller to my imac. i have a usb to 9 pin male adaptor that im currently plugging it in to but its not working and i dont know if there is a way to check if my mac even knows its there?

am i better off with one of these instead? http://www.pandawill.com/sega-genesis-6-buttons-game-control-pad-white_p35017.ht ml

or is there a driver i can download or anything else i can do?

any help will be great cheers!
