iPad pages toolbar disappeared

All I have is a blank page to type on now in Pages. No toolbar, yes the search magnifying glass which shows just the one document, ability to copy, cut and pastesD, but somehow I have lost access to the program functions themselves,f. When I go out by the button, and select pages again, it brings up this same document which I cannot do anything with, not even delete it. I have no idea wheat I did to cause this seemingly irrevocable condition. HELP
