DirectoryServices crashing since 10.6.3

Hi,
I just upgraded to 10.6.3 on an XServe, and it seemed to work ok. But after a while (maybe an hour) nobody can log on to the server any more. Not ServerAdmin, not ScreenSharing... I have twice now just powered it off, since I didn't see anything else I could do. Anyway, after last restart I just stayed logged in to see if anything happening. The log entries that I assume are the relevant ones:

The last bunch about this being fatal reappears every hour from then on...

Any ideas where/what to check?

Thanks,

Did anyone dare try Time Machine with the just released 10.6.4 update? There's only one mention of OD in the release notes, but it might have to do with our problem indirectly:

+Directory Services: Improves reliability of Directory Services, particularly when Spotlight is enabled on the server.+

Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that the documentation of SL Server states that not everything is backed up properly when using Time Machine. Especially the iCal Server documentation states that you have to device your own backup of the calendar data because Time Machine won't back it up at all.

Trying 10.6.4 today. Fingers crossed. I have eleven clients running 10.6.3 server with no problems and one with severe problems as described by the users in this post. We even tried migrating the OD to another machine but it ended same result. The only difference I can see with this client is that they have a FileMaker Server on another machine that uses OD for authentication to the database.

Hallo

I have the same issue under 10.6.4
I installed the combi 10.6.4 update and the problem still occured. about 2 or 3 times a day. The only solution is a restart of the OS X server 😟. Time Machine is running i will try to deactive this and wait some days if the problem still occurs

Assertion failed: (name1), function rbt compare_namekey, file /SourceCache/DirectoryServiceDaemon/DirectoryService-621.4/Server/Mbrd_HashTabl e.c

Maybe other solutions?

Gérard

Hello

I followed the instructions in this thread

1)
To move the files:
sudo mkdir /etc/server_backup.disabled
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/40-openDirectory.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/55-sharePoints.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/

2)
I exclude the following Directory from TM
/var/db

3)
Ferther I spoke with Apple and they advised me to also disable the Spotlight Funktion in the OS X Server

Now I had no crash for more then 4 days 😉

Let's hope 10.6.5 will fix this bug!!!

Since I upgraded to 10.4.6 Users are being locked out from accessing mail, calendar, AFP, VPN, SSH and ARD sessions. A restart of the server solves the issue. The only error I am seeing in the logs around crash time is:

ARDAgent[522] ARDAgent 522 ValidDHEXAdmin unexpected error -14136

These appear every minute until the server is restarted. I googled the error and found many instances referencing an OD bug in 10.5.5 with that error. Is anyone else seeing this error?

Hallo there,

I just want to add myself to this list. But also I want to describe my issues, because things here seem to be a little different:

We started of with a clean 10.6.0 install and applied the 10.6.3 combo and the v1.1 upgrade. We are using SLS as a workgroup server in a mixed Windows XP / Mac OS X 10.5.x to 10.6.x environment. Everything was running perfectly for the first few weeks.

But suddenly (and I cannot guess that anything was changed on the server config) things started turning worse. I see the messages of OD crashing, AFP and SMB connections drop and new client-sessions cannot be established until I reboot the server... just like all of you here on this thread.

What I noticed, is that slapd is stopped and restarted every hour, when TimeMachine kicks in. This wasn't the case before! slapd was not stopped, when TM was doing its backups... but something has caused TM to change its behaviour! I wonder what could have caused this.

Now this is what I find in the logs every hour:
Jun 23 08:34:18 dexter slapd[4888]: daemon: shutdown requested and initiated.
Jun 23 08:34:18 dexter slapd[4888]: slapd shutdown: waiting for 0 threads to terminate
Jun 23 08:34:24 dexter slapd[4888]: slapd stopped.
Jun 23 08:36:45 dexter slapd[77]: @(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.11 (Feb 11 2010 02:23:14) $

Jun 23 08:36:46 dexter slapd[77]: bdb monitor_dbopen: monitoring disabled; configure monitor database to enable
Jun 23 08:36:46 dexter slapd[77]: slapd starting

The crash reports of DirectoryService list two different threads that crash:

What also makes me wonder is my log.smb file, which is littered with a lot of messages like this, since the OD crashes occur:

As you can see, these messages come in a lot. So ti is unlikely that these messages have anything to do with TM, but they also started to appear when OD started to crash and when TM started to stop OD every hour. Does anyone have any idea regarding this?

Thanks in advance!

I will try to improve things by stopping TimeMachine but what I can say now already: Stopping TM does not stop the " darwinacl: mapped NT permissions 0x100000 to Darwin permset 0" messages!

Jo.

Hi all,

I’ve been tracking this problem for a while now and there seem to be three prominent concurrent threads that are all alluding to the same problem.

There has also been some interesting debate so personally I think the forums have been very interesting and there is a lot of good info going around.

For background I’m running two systems:

1 Mac pro 2009, SL server (AFP, iCal, iChat, SMB, OD, NFS, SWU, Web, DNS, AB, Print, VPN, FTP, Mail, MA, NB, SQL and Push) Raid 5 and Drobo Pro on firewire. 3 2008 Mac Mini, 27 iMac, vista media centre, Macbook pro, airport extreme. This is my home/dev/test rig.

2 2008 xserve, SL server (DHCP,OD,AFP,SMB,DNS,SW,NB,Web,ical,VPN) Raid 5 and Drobo Pro on Firewire. 11 2008 iMacs, 1 XP Bootcamp iMac, airport extreme, Windows 2008 terminal server(Dell, yuk). HP printers connected locally. This is our office rig.

Upgraded to SL Server and moved to 10.6.2, apparently all running smoothly with no problems.

10.6.3 comes along and I (foolishly) jump into upgrading both clients and server, all was well for 3-4 days then all **** breaks loose. All the clients print queues began jamming and then total loss of the server at least once if not twice a day. I’ll park the print issue for now. The server crash would start with total failure of AFP shares (not the SMB, strange as they same AFP was shared SMB to the windows client) los of directory server connection no VPN or remote connections and management tools (server admin/WGM) it would also screw up LOM on the xserve. Interestingly no apparent problems on my home rig, but this get used far less.

There was a problem during the upgrade which broke the iChat server, so I thought the problems was a screwed up install. So I did a fresh install on to 10.6.3 and imported the OD. Fine for two/three days then the crashes started again. No problems on my home rig.

The crashes got too much as 10.6.4 was released, however on some of the other threads they reporting no improvement with 10.6.4. So having discussed with the office manager I decided to rebuild the whole lot, OD and all.

So now we I have a stable 10.6.2 (server and clients) printing as back to normal (never got to debug that one) and I have started looking into this further.

I have also upgraded my home rig to 10.6.4, which apart from some iCal authentication failures on the new IP4 (which despite all the hype has a great signal and is awesome) which have not bee repeated on my iPad so I’m putting it down to an iOS 4 issue, appears totally stable.
So I have been looking at the 10.6.2 setup and looking at the logs closer. Low and behold numerous crash reports, every hour like clockwork.

SLAPD crashes every time Timemachine runs the prebackuphook, also verified by manually starting time machine. Log entry:

04/07/2010 09:30:08 com.apple.backupd[84680] Starting standard backup
04/07/2010 09:30:09 com.apple.backupd[84680] Backing up to: /Volumes/Drobo/Backups.backupdb
04/07/2010 09:30:09 servermgrd[52431] servermgr_backup: TimeMachinePreBackupHook called.
04/07/2010 09:30:10 com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[84687] 2010-07-04 09:30:10.318 ReportCrash[84687:2803] Saved crash report for slapd[84686] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/slapd 2010-07-04-093010localhost.crash
04/07/2010 09:30:12 hdiejectd[84728] running

However, the whole network holds up and no fall over. I have tried the voodoo and excluded /etc/var and then the whole system drive. Still the crashes, the only time they stop is but totally disengaging TM. Disabling spotlight also has no effect.

I have looked on my server 10.6.4 and no crash reports and the point TM is called.

I use SA/WG/LOM daily both onsite and remotely via VPN, and it’s fine with 10.6.2 and 10.6.4 so any reference to these being the culprit is in my opinion more voodoo (I also stopped kicking the neighbours black cat crashes didn’t stop (Joke)).

TM is the culprit, and I think Apple tried to fix this in 10.6.3 (according to the release notes) and I think the fix is causing a greater expression of the original bug or causing more problems that it solved. Stop TM and you’ll stop the crashes.

I am eager to find out a few things:

1 What do the crash reports look like in 10.6.3, are the SLAPD crashes at the time the TM prebackup hook called?

2 Is 10.6.4 still causing problems?

Sorry to waffle, this has been beating me up a lot! Not bashing the voodoo, we all fall into it when we can’t explain whats going on and a big thanks to all who have contributed so far!

Best Eggs.

I "dared" to try it this evening. I upgraded to 10.6.4 on the server, turned Time Machine back on. On the second TM backup, OD crashed. I restated, turned TM off and turned Retrospect back on. Frustrated.

Tod Muller wrote:
I was experiencing the same issues. OpenDirectory was restarting every time TimeMachine backed up the server. Every now and then, I'd experience authentication errors and missing share points.

I'm currently using the following workaround:
It appears that TimeMachinePreBackupHook was calling ServerBackup (based on what others have said) to backup Open Directory. This is when it would crash. ServerBackup uses plist files in /etc/server_backup. I simply moved the plists for Open Directory and Share Points. My server has been running perfectly for about 2 days without a single restart of Open Directory.

To move the files:
sudo mkdir /etc/server_backup.disabled
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/40-openDirectory.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/55-sharePoints.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/

Note: moving the files back to their original locations on my test server caused the problems to reoccur, so I'm confident in this temporary fix (until there's an official fix from Apple)

Sorry, I'm not really following what you're doing here. What are the implications of moving these plists? Does the Time Machine backup proceed but NOT backup OD then?

Just wanted to add to this.

I started experiencing this issue after upgrading to 10.6.4 (from 10.6.2)
a few weeks ago.

After pulling my hair out (and calling Apple), I stumbled upon this thread.
I tested then put into place the workaround from Tom Muller,
moving these files:sudo mv /etc/server_backup/40-openDirectory.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/55-sharePoints.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/

But the issue kept recurring, intermittently.
I then shut TM down completely, thought the issue was gone,
then it came back.

The only thing that would bring my OD back fully was a reboot.
One thing of note, the OD status lights on Server Admin always indicated
everything was hunkydorie.

Then I traced the crashes to two events:
One, a manual Open Directory archive (from Server admin).
Two, a scripted OD backup from "ADX Consulting" called
"SafeServer" http://www.adx-consulting.com/en/downloads.html.

I've disabled the SafeServer script, and haven't made
any manual OD archives, and everything's been running fine so far.
Time Machine is still disabled (also worth note: my System Drive was always excluded
from TM backups; yet it ran the stupid OD killing script anyway).

My question is: are the below scripts identical to TM's fatal OD backup?
Note there is no "TimeMachineprebackupHook" business, rather the OD archive process...

==================

I hope this provides a few more clues for the powers that be....

Jul 23, 2010 6:36 AM in response to Dix Lorenz

I thought I would add my own experiences.

Started running Time Machine on an xServe 10.6.3 in May and started to see this behaviour here.

It's not crashing all the time though; just had one today, but that was 18 days after the last crash. In total since May 26 (when I started capturing logs) I've had 12 crashes. Time Machine has been on all the time.

Logs have:
Jul 23 11:13:44 192.168.0.254 Jul 23 11:00:35 CA-Xserve com.apple.DirectoryServices[68234]: Assertion failed: (name1), function rbt compare_namekey, file /SourceCache/DirectoryServiceDaemon/DirectoryService-621.3/Server/Mbrd_HashTabl e.c, line 88.

and
11:13:48.000

Jul 23 11:13:48 192.168.0.254 Jul 23 11:00:39 CA-Xserve com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[37808]: 2010-07-23 11:00:39.941 ReportCrash[37808:2703] Saved crash report for DirectoryService[68234] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/DirectoryService 2010-07-23-110039localhost.crash

each time it crashes.

TimeMachinePreBackupHook is called every hour, so definitely doesn't crash all the time.

I have just applied the workaround posted earlier

sudo mkdir /etc/server_backup.disabled
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/40-openDirectory.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/
sudo mv /etc/server_backup/55-sharePoints.plist /etc/server_backup.disabled/

Will see if that resolves things. Disappointing to hear in this thread that 10.6.4 doesn't resolve this.

DirectoryServices crashing since 10.6.3
